Can anyone from the Birmingham area recommend a place to get a respray.Cars been primered and probably just needs slight prep from the bodyshop.
I am not looking for a expensive paint job, just ent got that sort of money...

Anybody used Portland or Portway Resprays in Oldbury?
Cheers.

Really, even if prepped properly by myself. Most of the work by the Bodyshop is all the prep, where as the paint job itself is not that time consuming.

OK any good diy sprayers local to me,who would fancy spraying it,maybe bit of prep too. Not after a show finish, just not got the money now to spend that type of money on a 2nd car.

Part of the problem may be that many paint shops will want to do the prep themselves, because then they know it has been done correctly and if they respray it and the top coat reacts with the primer it will be their issue not yours.

The preparation is the crucial bit as you say and if you want a cheap job you would be better doing really good prep yourself then hiring a compressor and spraying it in cellulose.

Many years ago, a girlfriend of mine used portway resprays and it was shockingly bad...so bad that I went into the body trade so that I didn't have to ever have a paint job like that!

Obviously things have changed and I've no idea how good or bad they are now, we are talking 20+years!!

Bit pointless I know but I shows how a bad job sticks in the mind!
As has already been said, most body shops won't touch a self prepped job, I certainly wouldn't, even if I knew it'd been done by a pro.
There can be chemicals, dirt, contaminants picked up on the way from where it was prepped to the booth, the products might not be compatible, there can be a load of issues that body shops won't want to deal with.
On the odd occasion where we take something on that is 'just paint' we make it known that the first reaction is the stopping point. We then charge to strip it properly and start from scratch, this is on top of the original cost of painting..

I can't recommend anyone up that way as I moved to the West Country many years back. All I'll say is do your research and shop around,go and look at the work put out by the local shops..

This is it.They want to self prep themselves, which really bumps the price up because of time.I know the bodywork is not to bad, needs odd filler and flatting in places, but its getting to the point that I just need it done,as I am fed up of constantly rubbing the thing down.
I thought the roof and bonnet was sorted, but after showing a pro the roof,it will show up big time once painted, and the bonnet needs more filler.
Going round in circles, need a bit of guidance I think, from someone who has dealt with minis before.

You'd be surprised how far apart not too bad in your eyes Is compared to ready to paint..

We regularly see cars that need ' a panel wipe and blow over' that actually need a weeks worth of prep first!

Give Col's mini centre a call. Last time I visited, he had just done a restoration on a late Mini Cooper which included a respray. It was 5k so the respray couldn't have costed that much. He's in Redditch though, not Brum. I'll give you his number if you like?

I had self prepped with body tech and when it got to them it still needed a couple of days work for them to re do the whole prep....as has been said above they won't touch self preps and just spray it straight off! It's not even a case of you won't get a nice finish its more a case of the paint won't stay on the car or will have nasty reactions and need to be stripped and re done! It's a blow to pay up that sort of money but worth it once you do!
