[Jaam-Design]

Wondering if someone can help me.

 

I have a 1991 Rover Mini Cooper with S pack conversion.

 

Has been off the road for a couple years while i 'do it up'.

 

Just put it in for an MOT and surprising it went well mechanically and for bodywork (couple minor bits to sort).

 

Anyway.... Lighting and wipers seem to be most pain in the *****

 

Sidelights do not work when ignition is off. The main lights work when ig is off. When ignition is on all work fine.

 

Any suggestions?

 

Wipers - Wipers work but not very well, fast does not work at all and it's somethig to do with the wiring around the motor itself i think. I did strip it down a while back and didn't have any luck any suggestions without having to pay £40 for a new motor?

 

Was a couple other bits needed to get it through so maybe asking for more help in the coming days.

RE the sidelights you need to remove fuse and see if you have voltage on fuse 7-8 (the bottom one of the four) the voltage should come onto terminal 7 on the left as you switch the lights onto the first click,that should bring rear sides, number plate and the instrument lights on. If you are not getting voltage there first check and clean the spade terminal and the male terminal on the fuse box (clean the whole fusebox and smear the terminals with vaseline while you are there as it might help your other gremlins now and later too), like wise if you have voltage there clean the outgoing terminals on terminal 8 (bottom right) one of those SHOULD be your sidelights, red wire with a green tracer line, one is the panel lights the other is the sides, I am wondering if the light switch has burnt out on first click yet somehow passing voltage ito both main and sides in the second position?

 

So to sum up,

Ddo the panel lights or any others come on with the first click?

Is there voltage on terminal 7 with the fuse out and the lights on first click?

Is there voltage on terminal 7 with the fuse out and the lights on second click?

Check behind the speedo binnacle, there may be some fuses(blue wires, 6 fuses) these are on my 1993 carb car and my dads 1994 IJ project

Check these and ideally replace them

If they are coming on with the switch on cal I think the circuits must be ok? Faulty switch has my money so far.

  I would suggest your sidelights never work and what you are seeing is the dim-dip lights coming on with the ignition.  Pull out the large pink relay under the dash, you may find that the lights don't work at all then.

Thanks for your feedback, i've had a play and look.

 

Not checked voltage but can assure you that the sidelights do come on (not dipped lights). Voltage is fine (i would think) as they work when ignition is on.

 

With ignition off, switch rocker switch to first click and nothing comes on, switch to second position and dip lights come on, use stalk and main beam comes on (both constant and 'flash')

 

With ignition on, switch rocker to first click and sidelights come on, second etc as above.

 

Could it be anything to do with this?

 

With silence and in the dark if i leave rocker in position 1 with ignition on then turn off ignition i hear (and feel) a relay click, upon investigation this is a large pink one situated just behind the ignition barrel under dash. When i turn the ignition on again this relay clicks again and the side lights lights come on.

I believe there was some sort of alarm fitted prior to my ownership but was removed before i purchased, They did leave a load of redundant wires in the car which after much chasing lead to nothing so i took them out. As i don;t recognise the relay (admittedly i didn;t play much with relays and stuff in my youth) is this relay standard or could it be part of this mess? therefore worth removing to provide permanent live?? Although not sure what wires would be for what.

 

On a last note, the sidelights did work (for mot) prior to taking off the road couple years ago.

Thats a Dim Dip relay for headlights

Are the panel lights and rear sidelights all coming on only with the ignition on too? I'm wondering if the sidelight spade terminal is on the wrong fuse box terminal but I'm still trying to think how it would pan out.

Terminals 7-8 on the fusebox only deal with rear lights (and possibly dash), the lighting circuit itself is permanently live and the front sidelights work independently of the rear.

 

What should happen is the first click of the switch activates sidelights only with ignition off. With ignition on the relay should click and illuminate dipped beam.

Somewhere along the line the switch is working the wrong way round - have you pulled the switch? Yes that relay is standard so leave it in there.

On the back of the switch there are three wires:

Red - sidleight power

Blue - headlight power

Brown - Permanent live into the switch.

 

You need to check which becomes live at what stage and where.

 

I would recommend doing the following with the ignition off.

1. Pop the switch out and check you have permanent live on the brown wire.
2. Then check the red becomes live on first click of switch
3. Then check the blue becomes live on second click of switch

If the above is all as it should be repeat the tests at the front panel bullet connectors:

1. Red is live on first click
2. Blue/Red is live on second click (dipped beam)
3. Blue/White is live on main beam

The results of the second test will determine if the dip/dim relay as gone wrong.

 

Report back and we can try again :)

Front sides not connected to the rear tail lights?

First click on every mini I've owned has put live to terminal 7 which then has sides, tail and dash on terminal 8 via that fuse.

Second click puts both voltage to terminal 7 as before plus the unfused feed to the head lights into either main or dip depending on the position of the stork and the relay.

Not directly no.

Front sidelights are powered via a red wire. Rear and dash are via a red/green.

 

The headlight switch is powered by fuse 1/2 being the brown wire, then top the dip/dim relay and then to the headlights.

The rear lights are fused on fuse 7/8.

 

Over complicated? Yes.

 

I plan to make a loom which is far more simple!
