Hello

I would once again really like to thank everyone for being very very helpful with advice and suggestions and encouragement

I have been having fun recently with my lovely 1275 mpi mayfair (year 2000)

bog standard except for a stainless gear shift knob and this aluminium aftermarket

adjustable dipstick

I recently had to change the exhaust, yesterday the seat diaphragm breathed it's last (currently under repair by myself)

and I have been trying to eliminate various gremlins - as I was reading around on the forum i got to thinking (which is hard for a bear of very little brain) that I should measure and double check my dipstick as it is an aftermarket adjustable one and perhaps it has been wrongly set or has moved

here are photos from the tip of the 2 rubber joints measuring almost exactly 24.00 cms

and from the beginning of the sealing lip measuring almost exactly 26.00 cms

I hope that is clear

is this CORRECT ???????  because this could be the cause of over filling or under filling oil in my car and could be one factor that is causing me some difficulty

any help very very much appreciated

If in doubt best to use the non aftermarket, i.e. the original dipstick. Overfilling can cause a lot of problems in the long run. I don't think those fancy dipsticks are worth the trouble.

When you are putting the dipstick back in the engine, do you push it all the way in? as in the 2 rubber o-rings go inside the block hole too? if you arn't doing this then you wont get a correct reading.

I bought the car like this

I don't have original dipstick

so I want to verify that the stick is correctly adjusted and eliminate the fact that I may be overfilling my sump

(or eventually underfilling)

if anyone has the measurement or has a similar stick and could post the measurement I would

be able to eliminate this as a cause for other difficulties that I am having

thanks again for your contribution

Use a standard dipstick to cross check your aftermarket one. Get it wrong and will be be costly. I would run with the aftermarket but check with original one.....#

@RedRuby

thanks so much for a rapid and accurate reply

looks like my 24.00 is close enough to your 23.75

I really appreciate you taking the time to do that

I shalll now have to continue my search to get rid of some of my niggles

again a big thank you

@Dusky thank a lot for these accurate measurements

I am 02.00cms out on your measurements

is your dipstick original? which car is it for?

mine is a 1.3 injection year2000

as it is the stick is a little on the short side and quite fiddly to pop out

the fill level is the same on all dipsticks (early 850 not included)
the later (97 on ) were a greater total length to allow easy useage due to coil pack. so if every one is measureing the same points they should have the same numbers.

all dipstick can be used in any set up (850s excluded)

so some one aint measuring the right things or has an incorrect stick.

some infos

Cheers Nick

yes I agree then all sticks should measure the same

so what is the OFFICIAL measurement from tip at the sump bottom to the beginning of the collar

I found on a usa site that a few people quoted 11 1/2 inches which is 29 and something cms

and 1cm on the dipstick makes a pretty big difference

I'll have a chat with my garagist too the next time I get down there
