Rivnut tools (not the airtool type):

Type.

Ease of use.

Brand.

Price.

Quality.

From my experience, the air ones are the only ones that last.
No matter what make or type I've had something has gone wrong with it, I tend to go for a mid range price wise, but if it's something you're doing all the time then the ones that look like a rivet gun are the best, unless you've got £500 kicking about to pay for a decent air one

Don't bother with the cheap slider ones, they're a swine to use compared with the rivet gun style ones

I bought my plier type from a guy over there a few years back, his site was Mr Rivnut or something like that it came with 3mm to 6mm mandrels and a selection of stainless rivnuts. I got it from the UK because I couldn't find stainless metric rivuts over here. It works fine I wouldn't want to put a lot of rivnuts in with it but it works fine for the 20 odd 5mm that I've put in my car.

I have the rivnut tool listed on e-bay under item number 290956647705 It is good quality and also does rivstuds and pop rivets. Spare mandrel so are available if need be. It's certainly good enough for home use

I bought this kit a few years back;-

http://au.rs-online....oducts/6235549/

Has M3 to M6 in the Kit, Mandrels, Rivnets and Hand Clincher. There is also an option M8 Mandrel available for it. Spares are also available.

I thought it great value at the time and now I wonder how I ever got by without it.

My only 'problem' with all Rivnut type tools and Nuts available these days it it seems that only Metric is available. None the less, I have on occasion tapped out some of these after fitting to UNF sizes without problem.

Can you link to a pic of either type as I'm not sure which ones you're refering to.

I bought this kit a few years back;-

Can't get the link to work and searching the site for Rivnut tool doesn't return any results.

I've got the middle type of those three but a somewhat better quality one - the parts of the tool are cast rather than pressed and folded steel. It's branded King-Klick and came in a set with a bunch of different size and types of rivnuts. I must have put hundreds of the things in with it over the years.

I have this kit:

http://www.demon-twe...eting-kit-ak396

It's great. The head swivels on the body so good for tight spaces. I actually got mine from Demon Tweeks too. It was on sale for 40 quid one day when I was in there.

The Matt I've got a cheap version of that and keep snapping the threaded insertion tool ( the bit that goes inside the rivnut when you put it in) what am I doing wrong?

You do need to adjust the barrel properly so you're not over-compressing the rivnut. I guess if it's cheap metal with low tensile strength then the threaded part of the tool will snap as you pull it up. Mine has done hundreds of fittings now and never had an issue.
