Is it not true that when a car has rust that is controlled and the paint is fading but original, it is called the "oily rag" look?

What Is "rat Look" To You?

I think the rat look is a bit of a novelty! I would never have my mini like that personally, but I would love to have a good close up look at the one above at a show. Check out all the small details and see the creativity of the owner, personally I think that one looks great.
Though I think the rat look can go one of two ways, either it is creative and considered like the one above. Or it can go down the road of "my car is starting to look a bit tatty, so I will throw a roof rack on it and rust the bonnet up and say it is rat look". This I do not think, looks good at all.
Though doesn’t this discussion highlight what is great about the mini community, or in other words the diversity.

Unfortunately I've seen it up close many times as the guy used to go college not far from where I worked. Looks even more daft up close.but I would love to have a good close up look at the one above at a show. Check out all the small details and see the creativity of the owner, personally I think that one looks great.

Oily rag is a way to preserve originality of a vehicle. It is literally using an oily/greasy rag on bodywork and components protects against the elements and means that the car can be used more regularly with peace of mind. Its fairly common practice on pre-war cars. Doesnt work so well with modern vehicles due to contamination of rubbers, etc.

Nothing could sum it up better. If it's tired through use then great, if someone spends ages and a fortune turning a perfectly good car into the second pic then it's tragic. None of my minis (or other cars for that matter) are pristine as I can't be arsed to polish car every second and only really care about how they go rather than how they look but if I am spending time and money it has to IMPROVE the car, not make it worse. I have had VWs and find the 'scene' horrendous. It isn't about individuality, it's about someone being able to say 'my car is the coolest because of X'. It is really bitchy and divisive and I am very glad that mentality is rare with minis. Perhaps it's because air cooled VWs are so appalling to drive that they go in for this sort of thing. Mini owners are too busy driving them! You have got this that has aged beautifully and still looks well cared for
(hope you don't mind me using your photo Buddylove)
God I love that mini
Then you have this
Keep the prat looking VW as they're rubbish anyway

See, i am not against the look of Nelly because it is not forced and is just generally a tatty car (no offence of course)
have you ever been pulled over in her?

The body is legal that is to say old and just enough is done to keep it together. Roof racks etc nah.

actually been pulled more in my standard cars as i dont look old enough to drive!

Nelly is tatty, and im happy to say that.. because she is lol. Shes literally roped together with every begged and borrowed part i can get my hands on. I think shes got parts from at least 8 cars on her haha!
Im thinking of removing my roof bars (not a rack) but as soon as i do, il be asked to move another rabbit hutch or rat cage! (I volunteer for small animal rescue)

The hint is in the name, it's a 'look' that people try to achieve for god knows what reason. Driving round with freshly painted different colour wheels and a load of random **** on the roof isn't a ratty car at all.
The people who can't tell the difference are generally the ones who bunch it all together as a 'daft trend' whilst sniffing wax and taking pictures of how the water beads on their paint... Which happens to be the same paint you see on everyone else's mini at practically every show
