I just tried testing the current draw at the brown wire to the inertia switch and it's tiny. The 10A setting was registering nothing, so I dropped it to the 200m and then 20m setting and was getting a reading of 0.01. Does this sound about right?

Err no. You usually need to move the positive probe toa sspecific input on the meter, marked amps. Did you do that?

You are putting the meter between the connecting wire and the terminal on the fuel shut off with the ignition on?

I'm putting the 2 connectors into the brown wire with the engine running. That's what I understood by 'breaking into the wire', but maybe I'm way off course?

Ok, here's the latest. The car made it back to the UK without any problems. It was plugged into the diagnostic computer and I have been assured that nothing out of the ordinary was showing up. I drove the car back to Paris (about 4 hours in 25/30 degree heat), and it conked out literally in front of the house! I re-checked the relay unit and the solder joint is still intact, along with the 30a fuse. I wasn't getting any noise from the pump, so I checked the 10a fuse and it has indeed blown. I am guessing that this indicates that the fuel pump has had it, and that this caused the scorched relay connector; would I be right? By the way, the fuel filter was changed just before the journey back from the UK.

I've just realised that I never closed this subject.

I changed the fuel pump shortly afterwards and that was the problem. No problems at all since, so fingers crossed... ;-)
