Hi, I sadly cannot afford a full professional re-spray. But one of my dads friends has told me to use coach paint?? Never heard of it and I don't really know what the finish would be like? Anyone had any experience of it. And any advice really? Thank you

Do you have the time and enough funds to prepare the bodywork? (fix all rust, dents, then put primer coats down and make sure they're sanded flat and smooth, remove trim and fittings?)

If you can do this successfully (and it's mostly a matter of time and concentration/determination) then you have cut the cost of a high quality professional respray by up to 75%. You may even get a better finish than a professional respray, since at lower levels of price they do less bodywork and may or may not make sure all flat surfaces are level (no waves or ripples in the finish, and don't remove the trim [they just use masking tape].)

If the car is already sound (no bodywork needed, existing finish is level) then all you need to do is carefully sand every part of the car that will receive paint for high quality adhesion and remove as much trim and fittings as you are willing to.

I personally would not use a cheap paint because if it deteriorates quickly (as it most likely will if exposed to the elements regularly) you'll be worse off than no paint at all. At least with old paint you can claim to have a "rat rod" look. :)

If you have bare metal already that needs protecting, but you have to expose the car to the elements soon, you can use a good epoxy primer to protect the metal indefinitely, and drive around with the primer-rod look.

There have been people on here who have got a very good finish using a roller.

If you have a look in my build thread I sprayed mine with coach paint.

It's roughly £40 enough to spray a mini if you do all the prep work your self pretty cheep way of doing it.

If that's what he means. It's just a 2k paint with the laquer already in it so no need to add after wards.

I am thinking about doing a car using enamel paint.

Think that's what Land Rover use.

I've used it a lot under the car and arches, so might try an old panel (prepped properly) first.

of course. it's about £50 for 5 litres. Underneath my van still looks like new, and it's a (mostly) daily driver, but keen to try it on an old bonnet or boot.
