Hi all. I've got a knocking/clacking noise just start up in my 86 Mayfair that sounds like its coming from behind the steering column/in the engine bay after an hours drive today. Its only there when the car is moving (not idling) and increases and decreases in speed in time with the car. It went through a period of doing it a few months back but stopped of its own accord??? Noise doesn't change with braking/cornering/over bumps Any ideas what this could be as im clueless? :D
Cheers
Jamie

Check the top engine steady between the cylinder head and the bulkhead just under the clutch master cylinder.

Physically grab the engine (when its cooled down and off), and give it a shove. If it moves a lot, the bushes in the steady are goosed.

Easy to change and cheap.

Does it get more rapid as the refs go up? Or does it happen on acceleration and decceleration?

It happens on acceleration, cruising and deceleration but not while the car is stationary and revving. The noise sounds like putting a piece of paper in a spinning fan if that makes sense!!

Thanks. Tried this but seems pretty tight, only very minimal movement.

Look underneath the car, follow the drive shaft from the wheel, big joint just before it goes into the gearbox. Also, if they're still fitted, check you dont have anything stuck in between the brake disk an it's dust cover.

Hi folks, still cannot locate the source of this knocking sound!! I've attempted to record the sound but apologies for the very shaky video. Anyone have any ideas?

Cheeky bump 😃. My main worry is that its something suspension/steering wise and that something is suddenly going to go bang whilst driving.

Still not managed to sort 😞 i've checked:

*Engine steadies
*Exhaust
*Crap behind dust covers on brakes
*Pretty sure it's not fan to shroud (noise in the wrong area)
Looks like its a trip to the garage 😞
My mate said it could be something in the speedo, does that sound plausible?
