As a footnote to the timing and firing order discussion, the distributor in the A-series engine has a shaft that rotates COUNTERCLOCKWISE when you are standing at the front of the car and looking at the engine. The firing order is 1-3-4-2 counterclockwise. This is discussed at some length in the PDFs I suggested you download.
The image below is often shown on threads on this board. It is a good guide for which cylinder is which and the direction of distributor shaft rotation. If the drive gear for the distributor is in the "correct" position in the block, it is also a good reference for where the sparkplug wires should connect to the dizzy cap.
