I have just bought an '89 998, with an uneven paint job. It is dull in a couple of areas and areas of painted over unremoved primer. to be honest it looks like someone has slapped it on with a hard brush, with various scraps and gouge's in it.

 

What would be the best way, to even it out and bring up a little shine, without needing a full respray? I intended to fully respray her in a few years time, but now I just want to bomb around in her for work and enjoy the essence of the mini, it's handling!

 

I'm appreciate any advise anyone has 😁

Mop it with some g3 compound mate.
Will bring up a nice shine and smooth out any rough patches.

Impossible to say without pictures.

 

if it's as bad as i am imagining, then your only way forward might be to rub it down and start again

It all depends upon how much paint is on there

Sometimes flatting back with wet & dry will get rid of the light blemishes.

Then polish up with cutting compound & t-cut.

Can make a rough finish look presentable enough short term.

Are we talking about Base coat and lacquer ? and someone just put paint on it.

If the paint is thick enough then try flatting back with 2000 wet and dry using plenty of soapy water ( car shampoo) then dry off. You will be able to see where the low spots are. You need to be very careful not to go mad here as you can go through the top coat.

Once you are fairly happy then either use G3 or Scholl Concepts S17+ with a mop to bring back the shine followed by a polish of your choice. I tend to use G3 first then the S17+ on heavier marks.

Now that is for solid colours, no lacquer. With lacquer you are limited a tad to the thickness of it. Again use the same process but take even more care. Mop at slow speed to start with then slowly increase the speed taking care not to overheat the area you are working otherwise you will ruin it.

Thanks for the advise, I guess a mixture of rubbing certain spots down, some mopping and t cut or G3 (thinking that's the same as tcut ), stand back and see if will do for a year or two.

 

I will post some pictures, when I've got it home and maybe you guys will have a better idea solving it.

G3 can be purchased from any paint shop but ebay or amazon would be cheaper

You wont polish out 1200 scrathes with g3! Its bad enough trying to remove 1500 scratches with g6!

Hi Guys, thanks for your advice so far, here are some pictures to show the state of the paint job:

 

 

 

 

The whole car isn't this bad, its just around detail spots like windows and the roof join.

 

So what's best to sort these problem areas out? Not sure what paint it is, but its described as a Metallic Gun metal grey.

Unfortunately, the areas you show in your pictures all have imperfections under the top coat due to poor or rushed prep.

 

There is very little you can do without rubbing it back and painting it again, although i would say flatting and polishing may improve the finish but not by much.
