That's a very good point, I'll have to check that.

It's not big enough for the whole pot joint, not sure about just the inner though.

First I've ever seen of a CV removing tool, never used one.

Remove the hub, Hold the driveshaft with your left hand and hit the back of the CV with a lump hammer, one hit and it's done.

It's not Mini specific so there'd be a few questions...

Will it clamp to the driveshaft, is there clearance for the joint itself and subframe?

There was a specific Mini tool to take the shaft out of the  pot joint.

and also if there would be any thread visable. and then some if it is actually going to do something.

your pots should not pop out as you need a too for that. just cut the strap remove inner part with drive shaft. Knock the CV off. replace. clean out and regrease the inner CV re fit add new tie to inner boot.

sorted.

Just by looking at the design I would imagine it'd clamp to the driveshaft no problem, it's designed to be universal after all. I think if it's too long you could attach it sideways and pass one leg through the window the driveshaft passes through and the other leg underneath. The one thing I'd be worried about is the CV not fitting through the hole.

Will it really just take one hit to knock it off though? You know the way the Haynes says stuff like "gently tap to release..." but it actually takes a sledge and a running start. If it's genuinely that easy then I'll save my cash and use a mallet

If you've had your weetabix then yeah one clean hit with a lump hammer will see it off

Right you've all convinced me, I'm gonna leave the tool where it is and brute force it. As a matter of interest, how is the driveshaft attached to the pot? If it's easy to remove I'll just take the whole lot out and to a vice and knock the CV off there.

As previously mentioned, cut the band around the rubber gator on the inner pot joint, then slide out the drive shaft. Comes out easily by hand leaving half the pot joint in the diff/gearbox. The drive shaft with the gator and half the pot joint fits easily through the hole in the subframe. Then the outer cv can be easily worked on in a vice or on a bench.

You can see the split pot joint here and the other pic is of the outer cv on the left and a pre-assembled mini spares inner cv or 'pot' joint on the right.

99 times out of 100 they will come apart easy as the other guys have said, just a hit with a soft face hammer and they are apart easy as.

But,,,,,,

If the clip has at some time been replaced and it's been over-expanded, you'll need many a good solid beltings to shear the clip and hopefully not wreck the drive shaft in the process. Nearly always, I've found though that the CV is a write off as a soft face hammer won't cut the mustard (or the clip in this case). This tool (or a version of it) maybe a life (or CV Joint) saviour when such problems are encountered.
