I'm building a bit of a track car at the moment and I'm blown away by the choice of aftermarket ECUs out there. Total minefield.

I'm going to be running NA, injection. I did run the CANEMS setup on my Mini and was actually highly impressed, but what are other people using?

One of my mates is trying to push me into MS3 Pro, but I'm concerned about a potential lack of support. I've been looking at MBE, second hand DTAs, etc. Just a bit lost.

Anyone got any suggestions? Budget is wide open as I'm in no rush and will be saving up/selling body parts to fund it.

I'd like to know what issues people have had, what response people have had from tuners, any issues with mapping software etc.

I have an emerald. Works very well, and Emerald in Thetford were very helpful and did a great job on the rolling road.

Whatever you choose, check out where you can get it mapped. Also get a system where you can get the software and modify/program it yourself.

Steer clear of Weber.

OK, Adaptronic looks like a good option. Seems to cover everything I'd need.

The other question is, do I look at second hand ECU options? It's not being used to compete in motorsport so I can "take the risk" a little with a second hand one. My main requirements are:

Mappable by myself
Tuners willing to map it (I struggled with MJ)
Wideband compatible
9000rpm limit (just in case I upgrade crank)
3D mapping

So really, most aftermarket ECU option cover my bases. Thanks for the input so far.

you never seem to save much when you go used plus if you get something with a loom you're taking a chance that whoever built it up has done a decent job of it in the first place.

how come you want wideband?

I use a wideband with my emerald. It allows for adaptive mapping and accurate AFR monitoring.

I assume it's the same for other makes of ecu.

I mainly want wideband so I can monitor AFR on a gauge. That's all. I can do that with a separate sensor/controller/gauge, but wanted it to be an ECU function if possible.

I know with the Emerald you need an extra controller to add a wideband lambda. I use a Techedge controller but others like innovate or PLX are also available.

I don't know if the Adaptronic needs and extra controller.

I had a Techedge 2J2 on the Mini (running CANEMS ECU and 45mm Jenveys). Seemed to work just fine and as I'd mapped it myself I liked to keep an eye on the AFR.

Techedge 2J2, thats what I use with Emerald ECU and weber 40mm bodies. I looked at quite a few different ECU's before going with Emerald and most did what I wanted. In my case it just came down to the comunication and help I had when called round the manufacturers. Customer service goes a long way.

I guess the next step is talk to a tuner who's good with Redtops (and fairly local) to see what their preferences are.

No point buying an ECU that nobody local will map. I guess as the Redtops are such a commonly tuned engine, most tuners will be happy to deal with them...or I hope so anyway!
