In the end I went to a motor factor and bought a Delco coil and that has been fine for a long time now.
Peter Baldwin said that the 'Pertronix' coils from the USA are the best, but they are expensive.

Had quite a bit of engine movement not too long ago from a knackered engine steady bush so I'd say that may have stressed the connection.
There's no wire left coming out of the connector (not sure what it's called, picture below) so I don't think I'll be able to reconnect it to the wire. I assume they're common and I'll be able to get a replacement in my local motor factors?

You can buy terminals such as yours, however you are probably better off getting yourself a selection of insulated terminals, crimpers and wire strippers for other future jobs. You'll need a female spade terminal for your coil wire. (Like the one in the image below)

Thanks Stiggytoo, I have a strippers, crimpers and a box of various bits and pieces connection-wise but I do definitely need to expand my collection.

First thing I would check is the engine mounts and steady s, sounds odd but I had a similar thing and fount the engine was moving back and forward too much causing all kinds of jolting and rough running. but in neutral and ticking over the engine sounded fie.
New engine mount bushes and he was back to normal.
