Matty,
Couple of suggestions before you start taking engine out and stripping things down:
- keep track of how much oil the engine is currently getting through
- after taking car out for a decent run do a 'dry' compression test on all 4 cylinders
- repeat with 'wet' compression test, using small amount of oil down bores
- is oil pressure good when engine is hot? Coud be worth fitting mechanical 0-100psi gauge for this
All of these will give you an idea of the state of health of your 1275 motor.

To be fair I check the oil once a week or just over and only have to top it up slightly now and then. Yeah I've got a compression kit, whats the recommended psi for a 1275 ? I might get a oil pressure gauge then. thanks for your help and advice

Compression test results will depend on the specification of your motor, best to run the tests and post up the results.
As a guide, if you get less than 150psi then chances are the tester is not working as intended or your engine is needing a rebuild.
