Rear Hub Nuts And Split Pins

Hi;

 

Silly question time, I borrowed a Tork Wrench and have just tweeked my Rear Hub Nuts (60lb ft).

Manual says to torque to nearest split pin hole, I had to slight slacken one off to achieve this - is that OK?

 

The Torque Wrench was kind of acting up on one side where it tightens to the left the Torque Wrench would not click off, when I went to undo it then it clicked so it was probably over tightened??

 

 

 

Last question, (silly question time) which way around are the pins supposed to go, like this, so that the pin pulls out:

Or like this, so the pin legs wrap around the circumference of the nut:

 The wheels are Smith UK by the way and only temporary to roll the car around on, I was advised on here that they are only rated for trailers.

1. Don't loosen the nut off, tighten it to the next hole.

 

2. I do the split pin the first way and bend it over the top.

Doing the split pin either way makes no difference to be honest, just one way is more awkward than the other to do.

By the sounds of what you described with the torque wrench, you had it 'set' the wrong way round - ie so that it measured torque when applying pressure in the slackening direction rather than the tightening direction. I will assume then, that it is a torque wrench which does not have a ratchet mechanism, as with ratchet ones you can't really get it wrong since it will just ratchet round if it is set the wrong way.

 

Most non ratchet torque wrenches only 'click' in one direction, you need to push the square drive pin through to the 'other side' to get it to click in the other direction. I think this has caught you out because one side is a normal right handed thread, and the other side is a left handed thread, so that to tighten the left handed thread, you are turning anti-clockwise  - which is the direction for loosening a 'normal' right handed thread.

 

If you were tightening two nuts on either side of the car which were both 'normal' right handed threads, then you wouldn't have any issues, and wouldn't need to pop the drive pin through to reverse the torque measurement direction.

 

Does any of that make sense? I now feel I am over explaining! :lol:

The Torque Wrench is definately a ratchet type, when it seemed that I was doing one of the nuts up tighter than the other I reversed the Wrench by flicking the lever and when I went to undo the nut it click to say that it was up to or over torqued (If you know what I mean) this meant that for some reason the Torque was not registering the other way around???
