Hi all.  I am changing out the old (perhaps original) cones for new ones with hi lo's on my 1972 mini 850.  The new cones have not arrived yet, but I thought I'd get started getting everything off so that I can go straight to work when they arrive.  I had a devil of a time getting the rear cones and trumpets off, but finally managed.  However, the right side cone came off with a rusty metal ring, while the left side ring stayed on.  I assumed that the ring was meant to come off, but now I don't know because the left side seems stuck (rusted?) on there pretty good.

So, what are these things, where do they belong (on the subframe or the cone), will the new cones have new rings, and am I screwed if this thing was supposed to stay put?

Thanks, Brian

The ring is part of the rubber cone and should come away, as per the photo of your RH side (photo 2).

As above, that ring needs to come off. Spray it with penetrating oil and leave for a bit then try some heat on it to make it budge

When you do refit the new ones.....coat the inside and edge of the metal part of the new spring with anti seize.....this will help the next owner, or you in a few years, take it apart again.  If doing the front's....same thing
