Looks like a very good fast road specification, only possible change might be to fit 1.3 ratio rockers if this is running A+ sintered rockers.

I'm stripping down another engine that's got some 1293 pistons in it. They look like they could be decent ones but won't know until I've got them out.

You really do not want a 286 cam for road use. It doesn't give maximum power until 6400 rpm and needs to run at over 5000 rpm to give best power. below 5000 rpm you will get better results with a 276 or 266.

A ran a 1380 with stage 4 MED head and 285 piper cam, lightened flywheel and comp clutch, Janspeed LCB with home made 2.25" stainless exhaust, 1.3 ratio rockers and HIF44 for 10 years on an A+ standard box with 3.44 diff and 165/60-13 tyres. I competed in many road rallies and used it as a daily run around for long periods and it was absolutely stunning to drive. You had to clear it out occasionally in traffic. The only time I struggled with pick up was if it was badly set up or when I started using a Jack Knight Metro Turbo challenge SCCR box running the 2.31 first gear designed for the rolling start.

Thanks, you've confirmed my feelings about the 286.
Think I'll be better off with more average power across the range.
I've partially stripped the 3rd motor but I was mainly inquisitive to see what cam it had in. Although the crank bolts defeated me for today.
The pistons in it were shot, one was badly pitted on one of the top edges, almost looked to have a chunk missing.
So I still need new pistons after all that.

Is it worth the extra expense for omega pistons based on the spec engine I'm planning on?
Think I'm going to go for a 266/sw5 cam.
P21253 pistons are £180 a set
Omegas are £320, the £140 difference would pay for the exhaust and some towards the cam.
With the cams I'm planning it's not going to be sat at 7k all day but if for ever reason the compression is slightly higher than the rating of 9.75-10 would it make that much difference?
I'm not planning anything ridiculous, just if the head has been skimmed too much to keep it 10 or under.

Would use the P21253 for fast road motor.

They should be fine up to 10.5:1 if the engine is built right, this is same CR as the early MG Metro unit.

I've used Minispares Mega ... not run the engine yet but they look solid and my local engineer who put them on the rods for me was more than happy with them .. Nural pistons.

Yes, this is the usual "performance" piston to use.  There are others such as the Mega Pistons from MiniSpares or the ones from CalverST.

Phil.

Hmmm think I need to sell a kidney.
Mega pistons are £240 but I can't see any +60 on the website.
Calverst pistons are £320.
Then I need a cam, followers, bearings, shells and a new dizzy.
Stupid bloody engines.

Yea I've got tmf+ discount. It's just they don't have any +60 on the site unless I'm being thick.
Still going to cost me the thick end of £500 before I even have the machine work done.
Best sell some spare parts.
