Ok, allow me to start this topic by acknowledging that I may have made a grave error... While doing the prep work for my car, I have used some of that yellow high build primer from a can in a fair few places. I didnt know this at the time, but a few people have told me that this stuff is no good for spraying 2k paint over... they should really make it clear that its not for use on cars if this is the case, since the can actually had a pic of a damn car on it....

Anyway. Some people say a coat of sealer should be enough to stop reactions, where as others have told me that i may as well strip the car back to bare metal and start again, which does not really appeal to me since there is a good 6 months (or more) worth of work put into the bodywork by myself.

can anyone help me out here? please tell me theres a way I can get away with this without stripping the car back?

Heres a pic which sort of shows the extent to which I've used this stuff....

cheers

Chris

Not that this helps but I've had massive reactions with the yellow Halford filler primer. Won't touch the stuff now

it was sprayed in celly before, but after a year of daily use it really took its tool (stone chips and the like), so i would really like to have it done in 2k this time just for that extra durability and shine.

If its a celly based primer then 2k over the top is fine, if its 2k primer why would it react?

I used some of this stuff on breakthrough areas when flatting my doors and 2k gloss didn't react at all, only problem I have had with aerosol primer is that it's build is none existent compared to proper products. If you are really worried then put a coat of epoxy over the whole car first followed by a light sanding.

I use Upol high build and it did do the job fine. The painter who did my lads car used it all of the time for various jobs.

I've problems with the yellow stuff before now, it does seem prone to reacting.

Mipa do a really nice etch/high build primer in a rattle can

I can understand that, I am doing my capri in a two part paint that isn't celly, it's base coat and lacquer. Not as hard as 2k but pretty good from all accounts. Not sure if you can do that with non metallic or not.

If all goes according to plan my next one will be done in clear over base, may use 2k on outside but will use upol smartclear 1k on inside as have had good results with it before, I used it on my wheels that I base coated in old English White,

As Daz said, prep the car and use a good few coats of epoxy primer then top coat in your 2k.

cant remember if it was actually Hycote, but just so we're all on the same page.... so do we recon that a few coats of epoxy primer over the whole car before the 2K top coat should do the trick?

You should find 2k high build primer is very forgiving and will cover almost all other paints. Just shoot a couple of coats of primer at it and see what happens. Make sure all the yellow primer areas are well flatted back to let as much solvent out as possible but if like you say it's more than 6 months old 2k will lay over it anyway
