Yes if carb, check the small breather pipe on the petrol tank inside the boot is secure and not split or missing.....it should run from the top of the tank down the back bulkhead area and out through a hole in the boot floor to fresh air.
If fuel injected there is a more complex filtered vent system.
Also check for leaks and carb float chamber overflow under the bonnet.......this is more dangerous as fuel vapour near hot exhaust manifold is not a good idea!
Also breathing in petrol fumes is not good for your health!

I would advise not to drive until leak is found , you can pass out from the fumes & obviously burn as well
as above - float chamber vent , jet tube leak , fuel tank vent , leaking tank / pipe , fuel pump leak are all possibilitys
look under the fuel tank for leaks as well
does the engine bay smell of fuel more than the interior of the car ?

Well, how lucky is this..?
Had my mini for a year or so now, and have always had a petrol smell - thought it came with the territory.
Reading this, went straight to the garage and voila! Possibly the cause of the smell.? An open pipe sitting on top of the tank!
If this is indeed the problem, where do you suggest the I direct the tube.?
Cheers in advance as this will help the wife complaining of the smell!

Look at the fuel pipe. Where that goes through the boot floor is a big grommet with two holes in it. The vent pipe goes through one of them. You won't need to drill another hole.

Mine used to do it with the weber. Also didn't have a breather going to the carb, just ahd a pipe wich vented in a catch tank.
In the end I removed the weber because of it
