I had this issue with mine turned out to be the breather pipe on the tank which kept coming back through the hole so I cable tied the end to stop this
Also got a lot of fumes from the engine bay this was loose fittings on the the pump these had to be really tight

My smell of petrol was down to the gasket on the carb float chamber lid.
(Actually I t was a little more involved than that, but the solution was effectively the same.)

I had this on problem on mine too in the early days - first of all I had to change the mechanical fuel pump as it had split and was piddling fuel all over - then I also discovered no venting hose from the tank!  Now its all tickety boo and all I can smell is the Minions BANANA air freshener

also check that all the gromets are in place on baulkhead........
