I recently contacted the sport 500 forum who have all the details on the later minis and they de cyfered my VIN number today this is what he saud about the colour which is something I mentioned when contacting them:"The colour range for Japan was different to the UK - could it be Anthracite Grey (which is a sort of charcoal)? " - this is what the previous owner said it was, I just assumed it was charcoal after the paint shop calling it that when I gave them the paint code
he also told me that my mini was built on the 15th October 97, making it a 98 model by rights - I missed her 18 birthday! will have to make it up next year! haha
I will get around to looking at the paint code, I just haven't been able to get to it while it's in the garage backed up to the bike ramp while we swap the offside suspension and steering bushes and do the pads etc

Charcoal black was literally... black. It was used on the equinox and sidewalk if I remember correctly and cars pre 97'.
Japan cars were the same colour as UK cars, the guy on the 500 forum is talking out of his bum. The MPi cars were all produced on the same production lines with the same paints. In my earlier years i got a tour around longbridge and watched the later minis being built - including Japanese export models and LHD models.
This is Anthracite.

This is the official colour chart for the year your car was made. Hopefully it will enlighten a little.

The only other colour it COULD be, is LVD. Which is a slightly lighter shade but used mainly on earlier rover cars like the Rover 200 coupe etc
