Doug, sorry for the confusion.  I didn't anticipate that you would study the image so closely.  There is a wire from the battery (-) terminal to the distributor housing.  It was not installed at the time I took the picture.  Here is a sketch of the circuitry as per our discussions:

The fuse, switch and spark plug wires are not included in my test rig.

I studied your schematic and see nothing wrong with it.  With the engine block connected to battery (-) the circuit should work as I described earlier, light "on" when the points open.  I am at a loss to explain why your light is working in a different way and why it is turning "on" then going "off" without further distributor shaft rotation.

You did not mention if any instructions came with the distributor.  If not, I would contact the vendor you bought the distributor from and ask for tech support.  Explain what the module appears to be doing and ask if it is normal behavior.

I'm sorry I cannot be more help.

Doug, there were no instructions provided.  I'll get in contact with minispares to obtain more information.

As always, many thanks for your assistance.

In closing, unless you feel 100% comfortable with this distributor and the tech support you get in response to your query, I would consider re-installing the points distributor at least for the first 20 minutes you run the engine in after this rebuild.  I would not throw the new distributor into the troubleshooting mix should anything go wrong.

I've inspected and overhauled my original distributor, and installed new points, which are properly gapped.  It's sitting on the shelf ready for service as needed.

Thanks again for your assistance.
