How easy is to graft the later indicator/Wiper stalk from the MPI onto an earlier mini?  These days it'd be handy to have a headlight flasher and wiper controls on a stalk.  Or maybe somebody's persuaded the stalks from another car to fit?  Mine's a '76 clubby estate so mk3 switch gear. I think(?).

Hey Mini Manannan!

I did look once at reto fitting an MPI Stalk set up on to a 76 - 96-ish column and it's not straight forward.

But, all is not lost - given what your hoping to do.

The set ups from 76 to 96-ish had;-

     Indicators

     Horn (push on the end)

Dip / Full Beam with a Full Beam Flash

Wipers - 2 speed!! with a flick wipe, and

     Washers

The MPI set up also included the Headlight / Sidelight switch

To fit the 76-96 set up, you may have to change the column (I'm not up to speed with what was fitted in the UK pre-76, however all the mechanical bits you need are all off the shelf and easy to fit up.

On the electrical side, there are some wiring changes you'll need to do nothing insurmountable though, just time and some head scratching.

I've done this conversion to my 78 Clubby, the Aust built Minis never had this set up, though it did appear in the Moke from late 79.

Nice one Chris. So 76-96 mk4 on (out of stock at MS) might be the simplest solution.  I've just completely tidied up the behind-the-dash viper's nest, 40 years' electrical bodging is... interesting :-)  ..so the MPI stalks *shouldn't* be too bad.  I'm guessing you'd have to use a later column cowling?

I recently bought just such a column second hand from a forum member (no, not an MPI, just before that) and I would think for you a 2nd hand one wouldn't be too hard to find. Somerfords do have them new, but not cheap

http://www.somerford...roducts_id=5802

on to of the column you'll probably need an Ignition Switch  https://www.minispar...|Back to search

Blinker Switch  https://www.minispar...px|Back to shop

Wiper Switch  https://www.minispar...px|Back to shop

and a Cowl   https://www.minispar...|Back to search

If you want, you can get fussy and even get the correct black screws for the Cowl  https://www.minispar...85.aspx|Back to

I'll try to remember to snap off a couple of Photos for ya

<Edit: Here's a column at sensible money  http://www.ebay.co.u...WgAAOSw14xWPLag

\Just be sure the splines in the bottom are OK. If the Bushes are worn, they are easy to replace and not at all expensive.>

Nice one Chris.  So I'd need to replace the whole column? That's an arse.  I thought you might just swap the switch levers over and job's a good 'un.

As an aside...  Are those Carling switches you've put in that mini?  http://www.mudstuff....g-switches.html

Yes mate, thems are Carlingswitches, very high quality, nice feel and I was able to have them engraved (locally), there's two other - not yet fitted in those photos - on the RH side of the Inst Cluster for the Cruise.

Cruise control? There's something we have absolutely no need of on this rock :D I've been looking and thinking about a Carling switch setup, you might have swung the balance there.

Screech, it depends what you'd want for it and if the stalks are included...

I did us Peugeot 306 stalks in my old Mayfair. Took a rewire as they had a low voltage side but they worked a dream. You should be able to use pretty much any stalks with a bit of fettling
