Mpi Strange Behaviour

Today I finally got around to looking at the mini again.

After a couple of hours tinkering I got it running.

Turns out the ht leads were in the wrong order at the coil. They were set up anti clockwise instead of clockwise.

Could have sworn I checked them multiple times last year but at least its a runner now. Go to the full post

Hi, hopefully someone here can help me. For the past 18 months ive been restoring my mpi and this weekend it was finally at the point where I could try and start it.

It was playing dead most of yesterday apart from the relay pack clicking loads when trying to turn it over.

So I swapped the relay pack and engine loom out of my other mpi making sure all earths are good.

Tried again the pump primed and it did turn over but nothing else electrical worked. Then as I continued to crank, it got fuel and back fired. I had the ht leads in the wrong order

I corrected the ht leads but now it wont crank and theres a faint wiff of burning under the bonnet.

Also the wipers work slowly
The heater illuminates the rocker switches as does the horn.
The the light have just started to work but only the clock inside and when you turn them off the wipers move slightly.

Anyone any ideas?

Earthing issue. Check all the looms earthing points closely, making sure they've on bare metal and all present.

Thanks i'll check them all again and thinking back I didn't check the engine steady strap.

Do you think I could of done any damage when the leads were in the wrong order?

You'll just have over fuelled the car. Nothing to worry about. Definitely check the earth strap!

Finally got around to looking at the mini again today.
One fully charged battery and all earth points clean and secure means everything electrical works and it turns over.
Problem is it just won't fire. Every time I try just results in soaked plugs.
The plugs do spark but it doesn't look that strong.
Anyone any ideas?

Your coil pack might be on its way out.

Other than that, is your braided earth strap from the engine OK to the back wall?

Did you have the flywheel off? Distributor shaft out?

Occam's Razor! Always check the basics. Glad it's running again!
