Hi all,

I took the shock off and found that the top of the shock mounts had failed causing a gap which was obviously the cause of the knock/rattle.

After dropping the shock out of the body I noticed i was able to completely compress the shock by hand in both fully open and fully closed adjustment. This did not seem normal so I ordered a replacement shock.

the new shock has arrived and I am able to do the same... I thought there should be some resistance? Surely if I can compress the shock by hand then it offers no support to the weight of the car?

I made a video to explain what I mean. Am I just being stupid?

as has already been said it does not support the weight.

yes most you can open and close them by hand. some will extend on their own but has nothing to do with supporting the car.

a freshly transported shocks may require cycling though their travel while in the operating orientation a few times to self bleed/settle.

youtube is blocked as work so I cant comment on that.

I appreciate the shock does not hold the weight, but the point of a shock is surely to support/dampen the bounce of the car. If I can close it by hand as easily as i can then it offers no resistance to the movement of the car? I would expect it to return, even just a little. It doesn't move at all.

Just spoken to Minispares who confirmed I am being an idiot and explained how the GAZ shocks work. So the initial problem was caused by the shock rubber mounts failing. This has been resolved so there in fact be nothing wrong with the shock on the car.

Thanks for your help all  :proud:

A tip: When you keep the old ones, store them always upright!

just picking up on something you said - "the nut in the wheelarch" - do you mean you have put one of the nuts on the wheelarch side of the threaded top pin? There should not be a nut put there. The double nuts on the shocks are so that you can put a 2nd (usually slim) nut on as a lock nut. Just in case you are fitting them wrongly.

There is a welded nut at the top of the shock that you can put a spanner on to stop the shaft turning when you do up the top nut. I was referring to that. Sorry if that was confusing, I did not explain that overly well.
