The thing to consider, in addition to clearance problems discussed above, is the suspension geometry and in particular the scrub radius. If the wheel offset is incorrect in relation to the hub geometry, the scrub radius will be wrong and will spoil the feel of the steering, although it will not actually degrade the ultimate cornering ability very much. (But how do you use good lateral "grip" if you can't feel what you are doing?) An extremely wrong (positive) scrub radius is dangerous because it can make the car utterly uncontrollable in the event of a burst tyre, which is something that must always be taken into account. The Mini normally has a small positive scrub radius, not sure of the exact amount. See link below, and imagine that the sloping line passes through the ball joint centres on the Mini, not the evil McPherson strut (Ford's worst ever invention) shown in Wikipedia.
