Personally (and I stress this is what I do on all my engine builds) I balance the entire bottom end - pulley, crank, flywheel and bolts. Then just change the clutch plate and pressure plate with the bolts in the same place as I'm pretty damn sure the pressure plate is balanced during manufacturing. I also weigh the pistons and conrods to make sure they're all the same weight. A combination of all this has meant I've had amazingly smooth engines including one running 650bhp (obviously not an A series lol).

the problem with the mini is the weight of the verto one, preverto doesnt need balancing either for example

Nope, had nothing balanced at all, haven't had any vibrations at all

With all respect, but I wouldn't advise it on a public forum that way. When fitting a new pressure plate one should atleast check the dynamic balance. I think we had a case of this on the forum not too long ago?

Just telling people what happened with mine, runs perfectly

Are we tending to suggest that there is some advantage in changing to pre-Verto clutch and flywheel (plus the other necessary parts)? Heavy is certainly not good...

I also didn't balance mine, used a lightened flywheel from minispares. Been running it for a year and a half with no problems.

Sorry to add to the unpopular view point on this but I fitted new (verto) clutch, pressure plate and flywheel and didn't have it balanced. No issues here (although to be fair we've not done all that many miles).

Reading the literature it was common practise in years gone by as manufacturers didn't balance each component but most are now so re-balancing is less useful.

To put it another way, do it if it stops the nightmares but it's more than anecdotal that many don't and have no adverse affects.
