Ive bought a mini (ish) project, the car has the number plates etc and is lmost complete but the chassis tag is missing? Its a grp mini and its been off the road for 10 years. It was bult 26+ years ago.
The rivets have corroded where the plate was. Looked all round the bay and even in the car but its not there, just the brighter paint area where it once was.

I bought the car without the v5. I know :(
The guy was an old boy and has died, the car was bought through his family and its all legal though. ive wanted the car for years as its just been itting in he garden with weeds up it! Noticed the sale sign on the house so Contacted them and found they were going to scrap it?!
A donation to charity later and its mine.

Just need to get a v62 sorted however.....
Dvla wont help me without the vin and as the registered keeper cant contact them they have refused to issue the paperwork without the full vin. Ive explained the issue but they wont help, even the family have tried contacting them for me.

Any ideas?

This thread may help:-

Finding Out A Chassis Number?

http://www.theminifo...chassis-number/

If you have the reg number.....

Car Dealers use Experian as it gives the VIN no from reg but there are different levels of access as with DVLA database so a member of the public may not get the full trade info.....unless you know a friendly car dealer who can make inquiry on your behalf.

Ran the check and its given me lots of information but only offers a check vin box? I would have to enter the number and they will match it. I guess this is what the other thread mentions with levels of access?

Never had a change of colour and found out how many previous owners though lol

Do you have the engine number?

I had exactly the same problem with my pickup 2 years ago, find your local dvla office and speak nicely to them, there was a very helpful fella in my local one and he helped me get it all sorted.

I provided him with Engine number, colour, reg no, etcetc, and answered all questions he asked, provided lots of photos of all the parts together, ie, the engine within the pickup, the number plates in front of the same pickup, along with some proof of identity etc.

It was a long process, but if you can prove to them beyond reasonable doubt that the vehicle you have matches with all of their records, you have a fair chance of success.

All depends on who you speak to and what mood the dvla are in. I had the same issue, the last owner had chopped off the front end and not thought to keep the vin plate. They couldn't find the v5 either but had the number plates. A phone call to the dvla confirmed the car was legit, then a v5 application with a letter with photos of the car got me the v5

Thanks for the replies, would prefer not to be back and forward with them if i can help it as all local offices are gone and post is lost/ "hasnt arrived" far too often at the swansea main office.

Food for thought though.

i didnt realise they had closed their local offices. it was nice to have a name and number of an actual human to speak to.

send everything recorded. have you sent the v62 away without the vin number and had the rejection letter back? i think that was where i went from first.

if you want the original number i am affraid there will be a bit of paperwork involved i am affraid.

Fill in and send dvla the form and £25 to obtain the v5c in your name. You'll need to do this anyway. When you get it the vin number will be on the V5c. Straightforward enough.

Had same problem earlier this year, had to give reg number to someone in the trade and they came back with the vin number so hopefully StewartB will sort it for you

The problem is that it asks for the VIN number on the V62c and without it no V5c is issued (there is a sentence underneath the box for the VIN that tells you this); that's why Elf is a mini has the difficulty.

As i said though, i left it blank, put in a covering letter and photos and still got mine back. Worth a try
