With 40 years old brakes, the most you replace the better, dont be afraid to open a can of worm, its your safety.

+1 I always buy new or reconditioned instead of using suspect parts

buying the complete set of lines from MS in copper/nickel, and a new master cylinder from minisport (GMC167).

can someone just confirm that if a wheel nut DOES NOT screw onto the now free brake line, it will be the METRIC 10mm master cylinder I require...

cheers as always

So then,

just been to the garage, and with the master cylinder off, tried with one of the wheel nuts;

Anyway, tried getting the wheel nut onto the end on the male brake pipe coupling, as suggested, and it went no more than a quarter turn and then no more.

So with this, I'm thinking the brake pipe coupling is 10mm, so the master cylinder is therefore, also metric..

That'll be the GMC167 then!!

Yeap, 10 mm and a GMC167,

and a new master cylinder from minisport (GMC167).

Mmmm,,, how can I put this,,,, that's risky doing business there!

Minisport don't have the best of reputations, if they're out of stock they don't tell you, just let you wait. Etc...

But they'll take your money right away!  And it's coming tomorrow.  And you'll be lucky if you ever see it.

Or like the lightened flywheel a mate got - had no Ring Gear. Their response was 'Oh well, you get that'.

Or the seats that were in stock and took over 6 months to get here only to be stung for 3 times the cost of the seats in freight, despite having a quote for 170 quid,,,,,

They are also on the river and I've heard that they got flooded recently (I do feel for anyone this happened to), so if they did have a MC in stock, you'd be sure it's been washed!

It might be a different story with these guys if you go to the counter or live in the UK.

You'll have much better luck on the One Arm Bandit Machines!!

The parts themselves are the same from the same manifacturer, its the service that differs A LOT

Minisport sold me the wrong brake parts once, wrong thread, had to delay a work because they sell wrong parts

as 'luck' would have it, they've just e-mailed saying it's out of stock & would I like the GMC227 instead plus conversion pipes!

Going with SomerfordMini as they have it in stock - hopefully not too many bad experiences with these guys.?

100% happy with minispares, but they don't have it in stock (GMC167) - pity.

Somerford are good.  They have lightly quaint way of paying where they send you an invoice after you've said you'll buy it.  I like that though, it's kinda old school :-)

I've never had an issue with Somerfords, good to deal with.

right then, plot thickens (as it does with minis).

minispares quote part: GL 5021 whilst Somerford Mini use: GL 5014 for the diagonal split brake pipe set.

I'm buying the set to address x2 broken pipes and rather than have too re-order a-nother part next week when I stumble upon something else!!

can one of you gurus tell me if they are indeed the same part, or completely different - perhaps one has a sensor/switch.? (recall a difference in location of contacts on resevoir of master cylinder)

cheers as always

I hope you appreciate this!

I've just trawled through the factory fiche (oh the joy) and sadly, they didn't use those numbers, so they are a 'made up' number.

The GL5014 from Mini Spares suits the models earlier than yours (that has the PDWA Valve).

I suspect that Sommerfords may be following a similar part number system, however while probably being the same kit as the Mini Spares GL5021, they may have assigned the incorrect number to it.

The pipe kit to suit your cars should have 10 Pipes, the kit that suits the earlier models, that had the PDWA Valve have 11 Pipes (from what I found in the fiche). This pipe count includes those on the backs of the front brakes that goes between the two cylinders. Not much to go on, but may help.

I'd suggest emailing them both and confirming that these are in fact correct for your car as you've received conflicting advice.

<Edit: A little more digging. It appears that the Mini Spares GL5021 Kit are a 'Universal LHD / RHD Kit and has Metric fittings for the MC. The Mini Spares GL5014 is also a 'Universal LHD / RHD Kit, but has Imperial MC Fittings. If going with Somerfords, while appears to be a dedicated LHD Kit,  just check with them the type of MC Fittings. >

Ahhhhhh!

So then: new braided hoses, wheel cylinders, shoes all round and a lovely new GMC 167 master cylinder courtesy of Somerford.

Just got the diagonal-split brake line kit from Minispares (in Copper/nickel), and there's a problem:

The 'flared' ends are different on the kit.

This is where I ask your advice, as no-one has ever mentioned TWO types of flared ends!

Please have a look at the photo and you can see what the issue is.

Thanks for your help as always

The one on the Left is generally referred to as a Double Flare or sometimes a Ball Flare. The one on the Right is generally referred to as an Invert Flare.

The Invert Flares are usually used when lines screw up to things like the Rear Brake Hoses and some of the In-line Joiners.

Nearly all others take the Double Flares.

If you don't know which end goes in to what, then have a look at the hole you need to fit a pipe to.

If it more or less looks like a normal drilling, then a Double Flare goes in to that.

If it looks like an Inverted drilling or an external thread (male thread) that has a tapered end on it (like the ends of the rear brake hoses), then it will be the Invert Flare.

Just spoken to Minispares tech. dept.

They have said that the replacement brake line sets come with a 'DOUBLE UNIVERSAL FLARE'

Due to the flexible nature of the material, these will work with my master cylinder.

Apparently this is a very common question that is asked.

Cheers for the input MokeSpider
