Oh sorry I have attached another photo of the bearing in the cap below hope these are better. I have also attached a photo of each end of the layshaft, apologies for the poor quality of one of the photos.

I hear what you are saying about the advantages of an A+ DAM5262 gearbox, and see why it would maybe pay to invest now for that stronger casing, larger idler bearing, increased helix for long term gain and reassurance of a better gearbox.

I am currently thinking of once rebuilt not to be run as a daily, but more of one off journeys and a bit of fun, would this be something to take into considering when I am weighing up whether to pay out on the better gearbox, and to maybe stick with what I already have due to less wear, etc?

And also if I was thinking to modify the engine once rebuilt, would this be another point to consider the better gearbox? Or would a modified engine with this gearbox be ok? While not discarding what you said above about the weight of the car being more of an issue than the engine fitted.

The Gearbox you have will work, but in time it will give grief. How much time? Well, as they say, that's the 64 thousand dollar question. You don't know how it's been treated in the past. Certainly fitting a higher output engine will bring that time line down.

I can see from the Laygear that it's not A+.

The Engine Cap photo tells be it's a later A+ Engine and not from a 1275GT. The A+ Engines that were fitted to the 1275GT had main bearing shells of the same type top and bottom, ie, grooved.

Yeah that's fair enough I will weight it all up. At the minute I am thinking to keep the gearbox I have due to funds etc, and take that risk of how long until it gives me problems.

And ok thanks is there an age range I could narrow it down to at all?

Could the bearing shells have been refitted by someone incorrectly? What I mean is could someone have put different types in or would they not fit properly?

Age range - Roughly;-

Block     Post 83-ish

Gearbox   late 76 - early 78-ish

Unlikely that the Bearing Shells were incorrectly fitted. The Caps are machined differently to take that type of shell so they cannot be interchanged, though they can be modified to take the earlier shell type.

Thanks I shall use them ages when rebuilding. And thanks for the advice throughout identifying, I'm sure you will see a lot more of me posting for help and advice.

Early A+ engine-MG metro, you have a WFM1024 marking at the back of the block, clutch side.

I have just checked on the block and I do have the marking WFM1024,does this narrow down the age anymore than what Moke Spider managed to help narrow it down by at all?
