Hello, this is my first post, please be gentle..

I am not new to minis and have owned them since I was 13, (22 years ago?!)   I like to think I know a bit, but....

I have a speedo in my garage and I just cannot work out its origin.

The speed is fairly simple, its a 100mph speedo, so only 997 (I believe the 998 went to 105?)

I have seen plenty of these 100mph speedos, but this one has the amber warning lights at 10mph and 90mph.

I also thought the 997 never had the extra digit on the mileage.

I have stripped it and its not a copy and due to the pressings the warning lamps must be factory.

Maybe there was a short period when this was produced?

Maybe a police conversion?

Or even a production test, as the later 105 mph speedo allowed the lamps to miss the printed numbers where this does not?

Thanks for any help, I have lurked here a good while, and some people here really know their onions!

Here is a picture-

I'm don't remember the models intimately but 'd say that's a later 998 Cooper Speedo.

I don't recall seeing the 105 Speedos, only the 100 mph ones - not to say that the 105's didn't exist!

I come to this as the 997's had the Indicator Repeater on the end of the Indicator Switch, in line with the MKI builds, but the later cars that had the combo Indicator Switch didn't have the repeater lamp. Later again they fitted the two separate lamps in the Oval Binnacle.

I wouldn't take this as gospel!

There was a Moke, an Export Model, that had a similar Speedo, but didn't have the shift points / speeds marked.

That is interesting, and a good point about the indicator warning, when I say the 105mph I was meaning this type-

(I think the did this so the warning lamps missed the digits) I think this would be a 998..

Which makes my one a bit odd.

The part number makes it a Morris minor speedo, SN4419/00.   (not sure about the 00 part as that is not listed as Morris Minor)

I think the centre must have been changed, or this is very unusual.

Firstly no MM speedo goes to 100 and they never had the indicator warning.

Edit, there is no SN4419/00 listed for the minor on the chart here-

Ah, that's right,,,,,

The Cooper had a standard 3.76 FD Ratio, but an option (on most models) of a 3.44 FD, so I'm just wondering if the 105 mph one comes from a 3.44 FD Cooper?

I don't have a Cooper Listing on a SN4419/00 - not to say it isn't right, my listings aren't complete.

So what is the rest of the numbers? SN4419/00 xxxx the last 4 will help.

And a picture of the rear would help.

I have SN4409/06 for a 997 Cooper MPH Speedo, with a 3.76:1 FD and SN4479/06 for an early 998 Cooper MPH Speedo with a 3.76:1 FD.

There were different Speedos fitted when the FD was changed, but still coming up with a blank at this stage on a SN4419/00.

I've never seen one with the amber lights coming through the numbers like that before. Is it possible you have an inner from a Morris Minor and the outside from a different car?

This one on eBay has the same number 4419/00 and 1472 tpm. This TPM wasn't fitted to minis as far as I can see, it was fitted to Minors though...

Your outer section looks like this one

Most Morries had 80 Mph Speedos and some of the later ones had (an ambitious!) 90 mph face, but I'm fairly sure they didn't fit 95's to them!

If you scroll down the page here;-

http://new.minimania...Cooper_S_speedo

You'll see a Cooper S Speedo of the same era, with the Indicator Lights in the Speedo. My late (Aust) MKI Cooper S was like this.

The 1472 tpm was used in the 1071 and 1275 (UK) Cooper S that was fitted with the 'Optional' 3.9:1 FD, however, I can't see it on any listing for a Morry.

It still looks like two separate pieces. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but I would have thought they'd never put the indicator lights in the numbers, like the one in the first post

Late minor speedo, goes to 95

The bezel and the 100 mph end are the same as in my old 997

I kinda remember there was the 'extra digit' in the odometer aswell

The inner may have been changed, who knows, its 50 years old.. This is not what has me stumped, its the outer face.

The amber lights are factory fitted, and I have never seen one with the numbers interrupted by the lights before.

There doesn't seem to be a pic of one like it anywhere, I think the 105 face introduced later was to prevent the lights/numbers clash.

So I wonder if this is pre production or made for something not mainstream.

*That outer face has not been made for a minor, the green light tells us that and the small 50mph.
