Your outer section looks like this one
http://www.ebay.com/...=p2047675.l2557

This outer looks the same as yours. It just doesn't have the two holes in it.. (Which to me don't look like factory holes)

Like these?

Yes, but none of those have the lights cutting through the font of the numbers. They have the lights between the numbers..

The lights can only be put in one place due to the backing.

I have had it apart and looked closely at the confusing lights, and I am certain they are not a DIY.

They are pressed in a dome in the metal, just like the other lights - I work as a car restorer and I know it would be almost impossible to make it look right like this does.

I have SN4409/06 for a 997 Cooper MPH Speedo, with a 3.76:1 FD and SN4479/06 for an early 998 Cooper MPH Speedo with a 3.76:1 FD.

There were different Speedos fitted when the FD was changed, but still coming up with a blank at this stage on a SN4419/00.

I've found am SN4417/48 for the Cooper (998 I think) with the 3.44 FD and SP41 Tyres.

<Edit: An SN4479/14 for the 997 Cooper, 3.44 FD, an SN4417/10 for a 998 Cooper, 3.44 FD

Still looking! >

SN4419/00.

Sure this isn't a SN4479/00?   That would then add up.

I found this picture in a 998 Cooper Sales Brochure

998%20Cooper%20on%20Hydro%20Inst_zps2vvy

It doesn't have the indicator lights (this was a MKI Model) but it does have the small 50 at the top and is only marked to 100.

Hmmm, I think I will just Ebay it as a 998 cooper one, I am not sure we will ever get to the bottom of what it is exactly.

The final drive should be right.

Im convinced its something very special, but I have no proof other than its impossible to fully identify.

The part number makes it a Morris Minor speedo, SN4419/00.

4419/00 is in my Smiths catalogue as a Morris Minor.

I think the centre must have been changed

I'm sure you are right.

There was an article on identifying early cooper speedos in a recent edition of the cooper register magazine.
