Hi Minicrew

Mini is a 79 1000, with a 1275 in it still running on front drums but with 12" minilites. I am about to convert it to 8.5" discs from the parts I bought from this forum (mini josh - thanks). The driveshafts and hubs and all other parts I will be fitting all come from a later mini - I think it was 87 or 90.

The question is simple really, once the new disc set up is on will the track rod ends on the rack go back as they were with the drum hubs on ie. with the same number of turns, or will I need to have my tracking adjusted?

If the answer is have the tracking adjusted, will it be not so far out that I can still drive it to a garage to have it done, or is there an easy home method for tracking on minis?

thanks all

Shaun

It will roughly be close, but you'd be very wise to have it reset, it's not (normally!) expensive to have done.

There are a few DIY methods but unless you're experienced at doing them (well, the ones I've seen and tried) it's unlikely you'll get it right off the bat.

There are a few gauges and the like available, but unless you're going to do a few, it'll be cheaper to have it done.

+1

It will differ, set it with the string method, then have the tracking done by a competent garage

great, it sounds like it will be good to go once converted (and string method applied)  so I can get it to a garage after.

I think I'll pre-empt any garage issues with a pair of new track rod ends too

Thanks

no need to do anything to the trackrod ends (unless yours are being renewed). as long as you don't have any parts that are not correct (MK1 steering was different Geometry) then it should all be a direct replacement and will be the same.

NOTE if you adjust the ride height or change any suspension arms you will need tracking done.

I'd suggest using triumpgh track rod ends, they're slightly longer than mini TREs so engage more threads on the rack
