 And use an R clip

Alex, last time I went to order some from Somerfords, they no longer stocked them. What's the score on that?

Theirs were spot on, the same that they fitted here on the line, all the other's I've found are too long (and quite dangerous).

I've pm'd you.
But they are in stock so I'll chase that up tomorrow :)

A tool just like that, only factory made, used to be available, and probably still is, but it must be more satisfying, and cheaper, to make it yourself, so well done!

Last time I needed one in a hurry, I made what was functionally equivalent by  taking a gas or TIG welding rod (or any stiff but malleable wire) and forming a fork with the very end doubled back over the top, which needs 4 tight bends. I have to say that although it worked, a flat strip would have been much more controllable.

Nice little tool.
Now get back into that workshop and make us a speedo cable removing tool and a device that will make my 6 month old demon baby sleep all night.

I think you are asking a bit much! :proud: But as I don't have kids, I am not competent to offer advice.

As for the speedo, always remember to connect the lower end of the cable before fully refitting the powerplant. At other times, having the radiator out may help, along with long, flexible arms, small hands, patience and practice. Plumbers use a self-gripping tool to tighten the tap nuts on washbasins. The one in the link below is a bit pricey, you can find them much cheaper. You may need to modify one of these by reducing its length, or even fitting a universal joint in the middle of the shaft, but it might serve as a starting point for a useful tool.

£14.99 in Screwfix, a sister company of B&Q.  Go figure as they say.

Toolstation .. even cheaper.

Boring fact: the family that started Screwfix sold out to B&Q .. and a few years later started Toolstation .. which they have now sold to Travis Perkins .. clever!

Similar but subtly different.
