Hoe do all.

I've got a challenge for anyone more knowledgeable than google ? (Can't be Many out there). I've recently acquired what I thought was a 1000cc Austin Mini Mayfair from a bloke who drove it into his garage 20 years ago and hadn't touched it since. Couldn't remember any details lost the keys etc etc.

I've since towed it back to base and started to strip it down to rebuild. One of the issues I had was that the engine had been sitting for 20 years I removed the cylinder head and inspected the pistons. Not happy with just checking the bores, I decided to split the block from the gearbox and be more thorough. After removing Pistons from the crank I'm happy that bores, pistons, rings and shells are in mint condition. I would however like to replace the piston rings just as a matter of course.

Now the question:

During the strip down I discovered that the lump appears to be a standard 1275cc gold seal and not the 1000cc I was lead to believe.

In trying to source Piston rings I'm going off the stamp on the crown of which I can find no information . . . .  anywhere . . . .  at all !!

It is stamped as follows: M2210 G2 E12

Does anyone know anything about them ?

I can appreciate I've jumped in feet first with this but I could do with getting this project finished as I'm fed up with catching the bus to work

UPDATE:

I've measured the Piston Diameter at 70.03 mm, is dished and has AE molded into the casting inside the piston cup. Just need to be sure I'm getting the correct rings !!

Thanks again and mucho oblidged.

Hi. Unfortunately I don't know what piston that is - but there are many knowledgeable people on the forum that may. The only thing I would say is that if you've measured everything accuratly and are happy that all is all in mint condition then why change the rings? As if you do then you need to de glaze the bores otherwise the rings won't bed in properly.

Just measure the thickness of the rings and we (Minispares) can cross reference them.

Jolly good point, however I've already got the honing tool and will swap them out just for being thorough's sake. I've found a little info on them. But still aint sure what size rings to get. I mean how do you size piston rings?

Try FW Thorntons ... they stock old AE pistons and rings and might be able to tell you what you have

My Austin allegro 1980-82 engine has m2210 pistons.
There is a guy with a set on eBay.

Might be worth giving him a shout with a few measurements.
Mine are the 4 ring type and it's not very clear from the photos in the advert how many rings are there.

You need to measure the thickness of the rings preferably in imperial not the size of the ring gap in the piston.

Silly question, but shouldn't the lettering on the pistons all face the same way?

I thought the same.
Don't know if it makes any difference.
British leyland employees obviously thought not.

With those particular ones and most 1275 Pistons, it doesn't matter, but it does show poor workmanship.
