Quick Help Needed, Oil Drain Bolt Thread Length?

Best Answer Itsaminithing , 16 February 2016 - 10:33 PM

Going to be about 12.5mm - looking at some pics the original sump plug had 5 threads the Gold Plug i've got in my hands has 8 threads (20mm thread before it tapers off). Surely the important thing is how deep is the threaded hole in the casing?

Don't want to have to drain my oil to find this out, if anyone has a drain bolt lying around or are doing an oil change, could you please tell me the length of the threads on the bolt. I know its 15/16 head and 5/8 UNC thread, just need to know the length.

Much appreciated

Hi, I have the same issue - Rover '98 plug is shorter than the "super gold magnet" plug - I drained the oil at the weekend and could see a small bar going across the drain hole on the inside of the box, preventing the longer plug going in all the way.

Is that how it's supposed to be? The guy from minispares reassures me there's only one length of plug?

Theres no such "bar" in my gearbox that would prevent this.

Strange

Only one length of plug!!???

He's talking (insert word of choice here). MInispares sells plugs of 3 different lengths & the Goldplug.

There is no 'bar' in a MANUAL '98 gearbox.... is yours an automatic or a 5 speed box?

It's a regular 4 speed box. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's had some kind of bodge done in there. It's the gift that keeps giving on that front! 😂
Thanks for the pointers 👍
