I am trying to collect all parts and knowledge for my k1100 16 build.

I plan on retaining my SPI tank and upgrading it with an mpi pump.

Though I need to deal with the venting /breather system currently on the spi.

As I understand the tank currently has 3 lines running from  (and to it) 1- fuel 2- fuel return 3- venting/breather.

I think it is best to remove as much of the venting system as possible. this includes the charcoal canister and the purge valve. But i will still need to vent the system.

what is the best way to do this?

So the system vents to the charcoal canister which purges to the inlet. 2 options - You either vent it somewhere discrete, ie in the wing without the canister, or keep the system, remove the plug to the purge valve and ditch its outlet. Only downside of that option is that it's extra weight.

Block off the vent at the tank, remove the line from under the car and use a vented fuel cap.

What are you doing with the Spi engine when you remove it?

What miles has it done? It all work ok, maybe interested depending on price, no rush either.

And yes really that simple. Vented cap will be fine, but if you wish you could set up the vent similar to pre injection. Pull all the vent pipes from under the car and all the venting stuff off top of tank and run pipe from vent port out of hole to under boot floor.

Super so I guess there are actually some really simple options.

Maybe you didn't notice engine is in Sweden?

Yeah noticed it there. This is not an issue. Cheap shipping or could collect it.

it has done around 45000 miles, runs perfectly.

Gear box will need a refurb. But I think I get more for it selling it to the Swedish market

The purpose of the charcoal canister is only to act as an tank breather? absorbing the smell I a assume?

What did the purge valve do? purge what?

I have heard this system being called part of the emissions system? But i guess its removal does not effect the emission out of the exhaust?

It doesn't effect the exhaust emissions. It is all there simply because the laws changed and they where no longer allowed to vent fuel vapor to atmosphere. Same reason SPI's have a overflow catch tank under the wing for coolant, because it wasn't allowed to overflow on to the floor anymore.

What the charcoal canister does is store fuel vapor until the engine is up to operating temperature, at that point the purge valve opens and vents the stored vapor into the manifold for combustion.

HTH?

Great!

I will need to check the rules /regulations to see if i need to keep it?

I need to try and keep the system (or as much as i can). this isnt set in stone, but i guess it best to satisfy the powers that be.

So I thought I could remove the purge valve and just vent into the charcoal canister. That should be fine/safe?

Or find a way to use the purge valve. Perhaps on a timed relay, with a switch? and tap one of the throttle bodies to purge into? possible?
