I have just taken on my first project a 1992 998cc Mini City E

Last week I had the engine running for about half an hour when I noticed oil coming out of the dipstick hole, carried out a compression test and I have low compression on cylinders 3 & 4 (head coming off tomorrow).

Today I tried to start the engine and it wouldn't It backed fired alot in fact there was a small fire in the cone air filter???

I checked the ht leads and they are in the correct firing order, timing is correct

Now I have no choke cable so last week I cable tied the choke open and that's how it has sat for a week, could this have flooded the engine even though it has not been turned over ?

Thanks in advance for any help

How long did the car sit before you started working on it?  If the timing is "correct" and the wires are on in the correct order, backfires out the carb are indicative of a lean mixture.  This can easily happen if the jet tube is blocked or partially blocked.  Carbs that sit with fuel in them for a long time can easily become gummed up with fuel varnish.

How do you know the timing is correct?  How did you check it?

You said the plug wires are on in the correct order.  I assume you understand that the firing order is 1-3-4-2 COUNTERCLOCKWISE around the cap and that cylinder #1 is the water pump end of the engine.

The oil coming out of the dipstick hole may indicate a blown head gasket OR extremely bad problems with the piston rings.

Not to worry.  It's a common mistake.

With the plug wires on CCW, did you have any luck starting the engine?
