and this is what you will have to find out. and then check with VOSA.

as if you just guess you might find yourself in a whole pile of pain.

VIN number to heritage and ask. etc then talk to VOSA as to the legalities.

it is unlikely that they will class it as 2010. but it will be up to you to prove you can tow with it rather than expect them to find out for you

managed to track down the importer who says they will have a copy of it's japan papers so they will be able to send them to me...

I used to tow a 10ft Mitcham Marine Spitfire speedboat/30hp Chrysler outboard, loaded with skis, jeckets etc from Surrey up to South Wales regularly. With an 850 with wand change gearbox. Mind you I don't think plod was so on the ball 35 years ago!
What boat have you got? Love to see a mini towing something interesting

This boat is an Almarine Seafire but it's yet to be restored and whatnot. Engine will probably be one of the late 2 stroke Yamaha 40's - lovely engines! Are you sure your boat wasn't a John Neate Designed Spitfire? had the funny back 'wing' things - like this

The Seafire looks like this but with an outboard.

The 4 images at the top are the closest I can find. Mitcham is near Croydon in Surrey where I lived....maybe they were just concessionaires?

aha - looks like the spitfire I had in mind, designed by the same guy who designed the 'seafire' later in the 70's for Almarine

small world.
I restored mine in 78, it had been used in some kind of racing class and was in Martini racing livery....wish I had it now. Would even take a mono skier with the 30horse

they were and still are great boats - the seafire transom can handle a 50hp 2 stroke without too much bother.. on a 10ft boat!

blimey that must shift!

Some friends also had a Spitfire that they put a 45 Johnsone on brand new, and immediately flipped it (full lock on error when the skier said "hit it!"

Brand new engine, submerged...ouch

Am I correct in thinking that the twin point injected Minis were not homologated for towing?

Seem to remember reading in vehicle handbook when my wife bought a new one in '98.

ruling seems to be you can fit a towbar if it was first registered before Aug 98

I built a custom Mini trailer when I restored/rebuilt the 1980 Mini 1000 and installed a 1380 with 2.95:1 FD.  All up weight of loaded sedan & trailer ready to travel is approx. 2,500 pounds/trailer contributing about 20% of that weight.

No issues towing...don't know the trailer is there.  Hauling at 70 mph uphill down dale not a problem.  Combo can easily fit in a standard parking stall and is an easy back out if one is careful.

The hitch is designed to bolt through the rear subbie crossmember (mild steel) with 1/4 inch angle iron to reinforce, with the hitch reach (torque control) to be bolted into the rear seat pan.  Side exit exhaust.

Very much like many Mini trailers but built from 2 rear ends mated through the rear wheel arches, with domed/guttered roof made from 6 pieces out of 2 Mini roofs.  Boxed sub frame with single leaf springs, stainless steel dead axle with Mini hubs - axle has flanges ala trailing arms with welded backing plates, Mini rear axles and bearing mount so have 4 rear hubs on the road with trailer tracking as per Cooper S suspension on the sedan .

You can see photos of the trailer build at www.miniman.ca.

I towed this trailer to Arizona, across the states to Maryland and back 8,500 miles on its maiden voyage, later to California, Minnesota among other trips.
