looks a bit like a Honda civic ZC engine from the early 90s, with a different valve cover pattern. It's definitly not a VTEC. If I were you, I would get my money back and buy a clean restored mini and enjoy the drive.

I found your engine.  D16A9 1590cc DOHC Honda engine made for ROVER 216 GTI back in the early 90s.  It's pretty much equivolent to the ZC motor, puts out about 120 hp. not a VTEC.

The problem with the vtec engined minis is that very few are done well. I have driven/tested several and none have felt nice to handle. Quick? Yes. Nice? No. The last one was a 1.8 and it was nasty. Felt like it was going to fly off the road. The owner bought a 1330 Cooper from me and much prefers it.

Thanks all for your replies.

Yes that is exactly how I felt driving it back home it felt like it wanted to kill me!

Should of stuck with an A series that was tuned.

It is actually a nice looking car but to put the things right on it would be too much money. I paid £5000 for it I am not sure if this is good or bad to be honest. But I paid what I was prepared to pay for a Vtec mini.

I will have to go legal with it. Anybody know of a nice tuned Mini for sale?

Little update on progress. I have written a letter to the seller stating my claim for a full refund due to the engine not being as advertised. I have given him 2 weeks to respond. I know he has read the letter as I whatsapped it to him as well. He has made no response so far!

Just an FYI, if done right the D series (single cam) Vtec drive and handle very well, even on 10's......and if you get the right one you'll have 125-130hp, more than enough! My mate has one in a P'up and it goes like a scalded cat and handles perfectly (now that I got the alignment straightened out)
