Cheers nicklouse, before I order a new boot kit, can I just jack that side up and give it a pull or do I have to take wheel, brake assembly, etc off first and isolate the drive shaft before tugging it?

Another check you can do fairly easily is to check wheels are running true.
Jack up each of the wheel in turn so it is just clear of the ground, and spin around slowly by hand. If it touches at one particular spot each time then is may either be bad tyre, or something wrong with hub/wheel.
Anything more than couple of mm out of true could give significant vibration

That's a good idea. I had an out-of-tolerance wheel for a Mini once, but it was noticed when the tyre fitter was doing the balancing after fitting a new tyre. The wheel was returned to the vendor under warranty. I guess if that wheel had been fitted it would have caused a lot of juddering.

I had this same issue kept changing discs and running the discs in carefully but it never went away. I tried alsorts. Eventually i had the discs skimmed while still on the car. Only cost £20 per side and The car was transformed. That was 3 years ago and they are still perfect.

Did you "clock" them up using a dial indicator gauge ?

I'm having a similar problem with a friend's car.....new name brand tires and refurbished 12" alloys, rebalanced twice, front axles pulled, regreased and new boots, new pads and rotors, reshimmed the front ball joints, alignment correct - what's left? The car is not rusty, it's solid and the subframe and motor mounts are in good shape too.
This one's a little different in that when he first hits the highway it's fine, 70 mph is smooth but the further he drives the worse it gets till finally he can only drive 50 or below...the shake is in the front. The steering rack is fairly new and the tie rod ends are tight too.....
Ideas?

I had a similar issue a few years ago that seemed to be wheel balance related, on detailed inspection of all rotating parts it turned out to be the cast iron rear drum was cast offset by 3mm. This was an unmolested low mileage one previous owner Rover Cooper that had obviously not been driven over 50mph by the previous owner.
I would have bet any money the issue was in the front of the car but we live a learn.

Well after a lot of check around the front end. Last night a work colleague informed me that my rear drivers side wheel is making a scraping noise, investigated last night, drove around with the stereo off, then could hear the noise.
It appears the rear wheel bearing is shot, so hopefully change that and it might cure the wobbles......

I can't believe a bad rear bearing will make the steering wheel shake like an out of balance front wheel does, that's what I understood the OP to be saying.....not that the whole car is shaking. I'm glad he found his problem but I'm not buying the rear bearing makes the steering wheel wobble thing......
