Mini my is a bare shell at the moment (after shot blasting/painting), so all of the original factory sound proofing has long gone.

I'm looking for Sound Proofing for:

- Floors (under carpet)

- Bulkhead

- Under Rear seat (around fibreglass speaker boxes)

- Roof

- Doors

I've heard of roof flashing tape, which I've used to good effect before in certain places (around speaker installs etc.), but I think for the floors etc. I would have to layer it up so much that it wouldn't be cost effective.

What are my best options? Is there a good cheaper alternative to Dynamat?

That's just really the carpet underlay they use. From factory most of the sound deadening comes from the bitumen (?) stuff the floor is covered in.

Use Dynamat or Silentcoat, its good stuff, easy to install and a good replacement as it can be cut to size so you can cover more of the interior of the car with it.

The bitumen isn't really sound proofing. It changes the harmonic damping of the panel it's on as you'll only find it on large ones. Ie floor pans, roof, inner wings. Your best bet is foam sound matting to reduce road noise. Just look at the top marque cars, not a single bit of bitumen, just foam rubber panels behind dashes, under floor, in the wings and in the roof.

OK, so if I get the bulk pack of silent coat Damping Mat 2mm (20 sheets - 2 sq. mtrs), and a pack of the Isolator (10mm foam)? Probably use a layer of each on the floor, and just use the damping mats to add mass to the roof and doors?

I got a box of silent coat, then topped that with closed cell foam followed by cloud9 underlay and carpet. Probably overkill, but there are no rattles and things are quieter.

Wouldn't cloud 9 underlay hold water?

I guess it would, but it is not strictly necessary. I don't tend to use the car in heavy rain if i can help it, it's more of a summer car.

I have 4 subs under the rear seat so sound deadening and dampening was key, you can see what i did in my thread. As I said, cloud 9 probably was a bit overkill but is easily removed if i change my mind.

How small are the subs? I can barely fit my hand under the rear seat.

6.5 inch - they sound amazing. Not the deepest bass, but so much punch.

1330 turbo (110-120bhp) motor going in, so don't worry about that!

I'm also going for some 6.5" subs under the rear seat. I'm using just 2 though, in sealed fibreglass boxes of 5.5litres (ideal for size for sealed enclosure). I'm using Tang Band W6-1139SI woofers. Ported would have added more bass depth but not enough space (need 9+litres). Will let you know how it sounds!

I used the quick roof patch stuff, worked great and way cheaper than Dynamat. I covered the floor in Por15, the roof patch stuff, then under pad, and finally new carpet. Made a very noticeable difference. Highly recommended

The flashing tape might be ok on the floor, but there is lots to be gained by treating the rear quarters and both skins of the doors, and flashing tape doesn't have the best adhesive for vertical panels. Pics out there of someone's window, where it had detached and left streaks of tarmac on the window after falling off.

It can smell as well

Large, flattish panels need about 25-30% coverage, I've used old Dynamat back in the day and "Iso-pro" most recently. Silent coat is supposed to be good, basically any of the butyl ones.

Remember deadening won't block road noise! It only reduces the drumming of the panel that's caused by the road noise.

To properly block road noise, you need to deaden the panels, the use a "decoupling" layer (there are some dedicated waterproof materials, some use Closed Cell Foam, camping mats etc) followed by a heavy layer to block the sound (you're looking for Mass Loaded Vinyl) and these two layers do need to be as close to 100% coverage as possible, not even any joins!

It'll still be a mini, wind noise etc, but will make a huge difference
