I'm amazed my last neighbours didn't have something to say. 4 years of noise and my garage wall joined on to their living room.

Now I've moved my garage only connects to my house, and next doors garage, their house is a bit higher, and they've never said anything.

They're also my landlords so, if I was causing problems I'm sure they'd say.

To the OP. when you see any of your neighbours apologise if you've been annoying them with the noise, the person who comes across as awkwardly saying, "oh you don't" is the person who reported it.

i have spent the last year and a bit cutting grinding and welding. i do the work in my garage with the door shut (if i can) and luckily never had a complaint. only ever worked for an hour from 1900 during the week, and spoke to my neighbours about the noise. all the kids call me the mad professor after seeing the welding arcs coming from my garage.

oddly enough, the only complaint i have had was when i was putting up a false wall in my conservatory, me neighbours complained about noise at 1900....

Whereas to you your hobby is your Mini, other peoples hobby is complaining about the time of day. My ex-wife was one of those, she even had a book called "How to complain"!.

We are lucky where we live as most of our neighbours have learnt my dad is an engineer and have actually ended up asking for help on occasions.
One neighbour wanted to buy a car for his daughter but didn't know much about cars so he left a deposit and asked if my dad would look at it for him. Car turned out to be a horror car with accident damage and rust all hidden. So the guy was really grateful because it wasn't cheap either.

On the other hand, my bf has been very unlucky. His neighbours are against absolutely anything being done to a car... they even got funny about him having a car cover because it was too loud in the wind! But of course they can just 'nick' part of the land in the front that belongs to his house....

Some people you just can't please, and some will be totally understanding.

Where I live now, my garage is behind the house, ie in the back garden. My parents house is at the front on the main road. So if I'm doing anything noisy, I'll go to their's!

As much as I'd want to be able to make as much noise as I wanted, due to the layout of the houses on my street, I'd be proper annoyed if one of my neighbours was out with a grinder when I was trying to sit in the garden!

People who say "do whatever you want" are the types of people who cause issues.

It's not about doing whatever I want.

But as someone else has pointed out, everyone makes noise at sometime or another so you kind of have to let things go otherwise it will just end up with everyone complaining about every little thing.

The car has to be finished at some point so it is a temporary situation at which point we'll go back to being one of the quietest houses on the street. Our main car is even electric!

Plus there's fencing shielding people's back gardens so it mostly directed to the front of the house.

Personally I'd get in touch with whoever it was at the council that sent the letter and formally invite them over to measure the noise and see what you're doing. Get them on your side, so to speak.

I can only dream of a mini enthusiast making noise next door. What a delightful change from screaming kids, footballs, BBQ noise and barking dogs.

Well I've checked with neighbours upto about 4 doors down and opposite and everyone seems OK about it. So, time to continue.

They were all more interested in it.

If they complained to the council, rather than spoke to you, chances are that they'll say it wasn't them, with you stood at their front door lol.

Yeah I would imagine they would but I don't think it's anyone within a few doors anyway so I will wait for the next letter during the week. The ones I spoke to should be the most anoyed by it and they are either not bothered or absolutely love it!

Since it has to be on a regular basis (I've been reading up), then since I have to wait for calm dry days, I don't think they'll be able to pin it down.

Bingo....

One of my neighbours, behind my house and slightly next door stood at his fence when we started building my garage. he was interested and asking questions and recormending things we should do etc. I stood and told him the full plans etc......weeks past and we started putting the pitched roof on. Next thing a letter from council.....someone had complained about the height. So go through the riggers of the council and turns out we were about 20cm too high, so not a problem, amended the roof to suit.

Weeks later, I was talking to a roofer friend in the pub and he had been working on this blokes ridge tiles. He told me the bloke commented on the garage and that he'd reported it to the council. There property is lower than ours, but the garage has no real effect on the sunlight, views etc as they have 30+ ft trees lining the boundry.

Perfect example of two facedness when it comes to complaints.

Had similar to Jordie, built a shed and neighbour complained. Council came out to measure it and found mine was ok, thought theirs looked a bit high (their garden is significantly lower than mine) turned out theirs was far too high...oops!

The funny side.

We had a bloke at work who had nothing but crap of his neighbours.

Most days off the week his neighbours would go out leaving there music on full blast.

The bloke from work complained to the council and they sent a bloke round to record the Nosie.

He lived in a load off terrace houses and not a peep was heard while the council man recorded any Nosie.

The council man packed up his stuff and was leaving when he meet a lady from next door but one.

The lady said " oh its been so quite while you been here" the chap replied "well you should not play your music"

The women's face turned and told him where go and " have you seen what's in his front room"??

It turn out the boke from work used his front room when he liked day or night.

Sitting in his front was a full big flutes and all church organ lol and when It played it shoke the hole street.

True

Council never took this any further and closed the file. :)

I'm now working on a solution to the problem anyway :)
