Hi all,
Right so my mini has been blowing oil out the dipstick hole when I have give it a bit of stick, not so when just pottering about. They were plumbed into the carb.I decided to check the breathers and i blew through both and seemed all clear as air came out the oil cap.
I had previously cleaned out the clutch side breather but not the timing end one.
I fitted a couple of wider hoses to each breather and temporary pushed them into a makeshift catch can. Car seemed to run a bit better and after getting it up to temp I gave it some stick and on my return i had about a cap full of clear water, which I guess is condensation with some tiny specs of oil in it.

What is my best solution to make this sort of permanent,so it breathes better and takes the pressure away from the crankcase?....fit a catch tank or any other solution.
Thanks olly

I'd fit a catch tank and see how it goes, if it fills it up quickly you might have to do some digging and see what's causing the blow by, tried a compression test yet?

How many miles has the engine done ?  is it smoking ?

Could be worn rings or valve guides.

Hi waiting on the tool for the job off a friend to check compression.

Well 78k on clock and suppose engine rebuild,2 months before buying it, but I think just the head was done,as the guy told me some months later when I queried about the build that the pistons were not changed.

ok so your oil control rings are working fine but your top and second may be on their way out, ie leaking pressure in to the crank case area

So I may just need new rings to solve the problem after I do a compression test.

No it needs a thorough investigation to determine exactly what is required, but in any case you cannot just fit rings without other work....

Not many garages do this, but a manometer pressure test on the crankcase pressure will tell you what's going on. No anything over 2inches of water (positive pressure) at 6krpm (open breathers oil cap off) means engine rebuild.

Probably not much chance of getting that done then,as most garages will not of heard of one with all the new cars on the road.

Thanks for the advice tho, will be doing a compression test tomorrow.

Here's my dry compression test with warm engine,1 plug out at a time with part open throttle.

155 psi, 145, 158, 155.

Think this seems ok as there is not 15psi difference?

How do I complete a wet test with the same gauge, and will this further help with my results.

Thanks

Olly,

You really need to whip all the plugs out and spin the engine over with the throttle wide open to get accurate results.

You can then complete a wet test by adding a teaspoon of oil down the spark plug hole of the cylinder under test.

Cheers, Steve.

Here's the other results with all plugs out and warm engine. 178,155,187,159 psi

Another test with small amount of oil but maybe not same amount in each hole.

197,164,191,176 all done in same order first number being cylinder next to rad.
