Air cooled VWs do get hot but not so hot that they can damage the disposable fuel filters.
Ideally you want a fine filter right before the carb. If you want to put an additional one on the outlet of the fuel tank that is fine as it will protect the fuel pump. Just keep in mind that more filters means more to check on during a service. No big deal, just something to remember.
