The already mentioned butyl rubber is the same as the expensive stuff that comes in strips, and is by far the best material for this as it will not stick permanently. Just Google around for the quantity and width of strip that you would prefer. The cost should not be ridiculous.

Just as a note, DumDum is no longer available now for a few years, one of the things in the compound is now deemed not available !

Wow, thanks for all of the comments and advice. That butyl sealant sounds like a good idea, but a quick Google suggests it's £39 for a roll......

Most strip type caulk (which you are likely to find at the DIY center) is likely to be butyl caulk.  It should be much less expensive than 39 GBP.

 

Or... try eBay.  See item number 172170034146 and/or 290950111648

 

Search online for "butyl tape", "strip caulk", "rope caulk", or "butyl caulk".  However, with the last search phrase you may also come across a lot "liquid" caulks in application tubes.
