You don't hang around do you, probably the fastest micra build I've seen!

Very nice finish to everything you have done. you happy with the swap? Even though it's standard for now.

it's quick when you can buy everything in one go :-)

It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts about how it compares to the various A-Series engines you've had in the car, once you've done a few miles.

Having already covered about 300miles within the last week I can say I'm throughly enjoying just driving the mini. Partly not having to worry about reliability with expensive a series engine builds and 2nd it's a really good strong engine with torque everywhere. You can drive around at 1.5k in 5th or at 7k for every year change. The difference compared to the Micra is night and day.

It's doesn't feel slow compared to my last turbo engine, which was my worry. Unlike the turbo is totally predictable and you can drive it hard without the brown pants. It eats hills up without any issues. Top speed so far 94mph, but would do more. Private road of course.

Only Issues are -

Solid mounted Allspeed & rose jointed suspension increases vibrations and I'm still trying to stop small rattles here & where. (But handling is by far better than is every been) Car is setup and corner weighted though.

- Gearing is great for 2,3,4, but unfortunately 1st doesn't have much legs and 5th whilst at 70mph at 3650rpm is better than most minis, its still higher revving for a 5th gear. The Micra is at 3200rpm at 70mph. The answer is probibly a 3.4 custom Final Drive, but it will affect the performance. I'm currently waiting for price from elite transmissions. They will do a better deal if a few people are interested. Plan will be 998 box with better 1st gear and 3.4FD.

- the throttle bodies sound great and must be helping the power, but I can't live with them. It's like SC drop gears, you would really like a switch to turn them off when just cruising on the motorway.
I plan to do some long motorway miles and at the age of 35 I'm getting to sensible. I've got a Fusion inlet currency been made to my spec to quiten things down. It's a bit annoying as the itb setups wasn't cheap, with the Rams and filteration etc.

The tuned engine should give about another 20bhp and increase the revs to 7500rpm. The 12-1CR, worked head and 264deg cam am should provide a good power increase across the Rev range from 2500rpm. The plan is to fit that and gearbox mods st the same time.

Car is off to the rolling road of Thursday, I'll keep you updated!

Thanks for the very informative update.  The new final drive could be of interest to a few, the gearing is good from a performance point of view.

Totally with you on the induction noise, great for a few seconds when you're in the mood.

With regard to the induction noise couldn't you mount an air-filter housing above the gearbox with the feed to the front of the car and pipe the feed from the filter to a plenum above the throttle body trumpets. That shouldn't be much different noise wise than a single throttle body on the fusion intake.

Fabulous build by the way. Guessing with your engine building skills you work at the final destination in the video?

I'd not seen this photo posted, so hope you don't mind me posting it here.

There was a conversation a fair while ago when a few of us were looking at different diffs and found the CD16 a Nissan diesel engine used the same gearbox.

The pinion is integrated into the layshaft IIRC so it makes it tricky...

Here's part of various conversations we had about it ages ago, several discussions through different threads.

I did find some part numbers at some point but I haven't a clue where that stuff is now.

the CD16 is a rare thing so finding the parts was tricky but you may have more luck.

<EDIT>

Nope I was wrong again the engine is a CD17 which is why I couldn't find it..

here's another couple of links (probably better than the above links):

I did consider making a plenum for the ITbs, but I'd already ordered a Fusion plenum for a single 48mm throttle body, I ordered it as I was going to turbo my 5 door Micra for a bit of fun and create the ultimate sleeper. I bought the Micra for the engine, but it's in mint condition with only 40k, so could bring myself to break it just for the engine. I've since bought a BMW coopers S with 220bhp GTT pack and loaded with stuff, so Micra is going along with my everyday chipped 320d E91.

I found a n14 deisel gearbox with a 3.75 final drive, but it was £180, I'm waiting on a price for the custom one. It's not that bad to be honest, and without the induction noise it would be bearable. I'm just used to Modern diesel I guess.

I don't work at that engine place. I was just collecting my 7 port head after having the valve Seats cut for bigger 37mm inlets. I actually sell sofa's for a living.

One of the tidiest installs I've seen.

Sounds very raucous and looks lively too! Well done mate

Mine has a single 50mm GA15 TB w/ RC40 exhaust and cat converter and I think the noise is pretty reasonable @ 110km or approximately 70mph, I did have the thought that I'd not want to alter the gearing too much as I'm using a pretty light throttle to maintain speed at 100km in 5th and it puts it in a nice place in the rev range IMO.

I've no underfelt or carpet on much of the firewall / guards so almost a worst case for noise transmission. There's a short 0-100km video on my thread if it helps assess noise (microphone would have been facing the rear though).

Difference between the CD17 ratios (3.789 final + 0.733 5th gear) and micra 1.3 (3.895 and 0.756 5th) isnt much. ~200rpm @ 110kmh (70mph). So Im also interested in price for custom final drive for this reason. Looked through many RS5F30A gearboxes so far, none have had 3.55 final drive.

Very nice project, I got good ideas from it! I like how clean and well the engine fits to your mini.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get on the dyno on Thursday. I was there all ready but the morning session car had some problems and was due to be raced the following day and was booked on a ferry that evening.

Just waiting for my radiator & catch tank to be made from Concept Racing, and Matty at Fusion for the Throttle bodies manifold, and modified rocker cover.

Next job is brakes, wiring, interior.

Hello,

 Nice build looks tidy.

What brake set up is that ?? what size are they ??

Brakes in the photos are Specialist conponents Monoblock, but I've since fitted a set a Cooper S 7.5's due to issues with the caliper catching on the Allspeed Tie Bars.

Had the same problem with a set of KAD 7.9" disc and calipers. It meant the use of rack limiters that were a little to restrictive for tight turns.

Long term plan is to find some better brakes, as the S brakes are just about OK with Mintex 1144's.
