Hello,

I own a 1984 Mini 25, with original 998cc engine. A few months back I bought a 1275 engine (as I wanted the extra power), with the intention of carrying out the transplant myself. Since then, winter has passed and summer is fast approaching but my sorry little car and new engine sit un-touched and I have come to the sudden realisation that I simply don't know what I'm doing. My knowledge of cars is very, very basic.

I wondered if any of you fellow Mini-loving chaps would be interested in giving me a hand in swapping out the engines and getting it up and running, whilst showing me the ropes. Of course, I'd be willing to pay you for your time and efforts. Failing that, any advice and tips to point me in the right direction would be great!

I am still short of a few bits to get me underway, but here's a list of what I have and what (I think) I need:

-- HAVE ---

* 1275cc A-Series Engine c/w gearbox
* HIF44 Carburettor (in need of a refurb)
* Uprated alternator (from old engine)
* Coil (both ballasted and non-ballasted as I don't know which I'd need)
* Aluminium 2-Core Rad (from old engine)
* Water Pump (from old engine)
* Thermostat & housing (from old engine)
* Engine Crane

--- WHAT (I THINK) I NEED ---

* Correct inlet manifold (though I may just go ahead and buy a suitable Stage 1 Kit)
* Gasket set
* A rewiring kit??

Of course I'd source these parts myself before going ahead and I may very well have missed out stuff that I'll need, as I mentioned my knowledge of cars is very basic. So if that is the case, I'd really appreciate some pointers on the parts/tools I'll need.

Just as a heads up, if you were willing to jump in and offer your services, I live in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

Cheers,

Jamie

If its an alloy inlet manifold it'll probably be the same. You need a different radiator top bracket and top hose, distributor is different as well.
Wiring etc is all the same. If they both use the same flywheel you cna use the same starter etc as well

Have you heard the 1275 running ? seen lots of work gone into changing engines and then find it rattles and smokes like a witch, you've more chance of finding a 998cc worth fitting then a 1275 if I'm honest.

No, if I'm honest I haven't heard it running. I bought the thing on a whim from a member who messaged me on here. He assured me it ran absolutely fine and that's all I went on.

I know it's a risk but finding these engines seems nigh-on impossible without spending an absolute fortune.

I'd be inclined to at least compression check it before fitting

Probably a very wise move. What sort of compression psi should I be looking for?

Not sure what the engine is But its got O.E Electronic so a 1990s 1275, 150+ psi, if you find one out of sync i.e 145/145/90/145 then that needs investigating before fitting

Okay, thanks for the heads up. I'll give that a go hopefully this weekend and report back.
