Hi I am changing from positive earth to negative earth. I have a negative earth electronic dizzy my battery has been changed round I want to use the Dynamo what was for positive earth I have been told by connecting the wires to this it will blow my dizzy. What do I need to do to get my battery to recharge and is there anything else I need to change around before I start blowing things? Currently got engine running but needs the charging system sorted any help would be great cheers Tom

There are number of sites showing how. Think minimania is one. Probably a thread on here if you search.

Disconnect the distributor first though. Just in case ...

This is how I did one a long time ago.

Connect the negative of the battery to the earth strap but don't at this stage connect up the positive. Remove both dynamo leads; the dynamo will still earth through the mounting brackets. Connect a length of cable to the positive side of the battery. Touch the other end of this cable briefly (enough to make a small spark) to the small terminal of the dynamo a few times. Your dynamo will now be repolarised. Connect the dynamo leads, connect the positive side of the battery and when you start up the ignition light will go out. What you are doing is reversing polarity of the small residual magnetism in the dynamo which is necessary to start it charging.

You may need to look at the heater motor, wiper motor, fuel pump etc.

No problem.

It should be, you will benefit from new brushes if you haven't already fitted some; make sure the springs that hold them in place are strong and more importantly make sure the gaps in the commutator are cleaned out.

Are these areas inside the Dynamo? It's a brand new one from mini spares. Thanks Tom

Yes it is work to do inside, If its a new one you won't need to check.

Take the battery off and take it round to the front of the car. Connect the negative to the case of the dynamo and flash the positive to the terminal. That way you only need two short pieces of wire. Just make sure you have a real good earth otherwise it won't flash.

Ideally you should have flashed the positive to the small terminal. It looks like you've got away with it.

Is 12.10 volts enough charge tho? I might do it again so I put live wire from positive to big connector and a wire of negative battery to small connector? Cheers Tom
