Dynamos aren't as efficient as alternators, the voltage at the battery is determined by the voltage regulator not the output of the dynamo. You'll never achieve the same efficiency as an alternator for a given amount of revs, therefore, you'll have to be more careful regarding electric consumption. Charging a battery with a dynamo relies on time rather than engine revs, hence the change by the motor industry to alternators. Don't repeat the process especially wrongly, you'll see what I mean if you read my earliest post about the initial flashing but that's now been done.

Ok cheers what ile do is have the engine running and put the volt metre on the battery if the voltage starts going down to 11 volts then I need to flash it again? Thanks Tom

You don't need to flash it ever again. The flashing changes the polarity and has nothing to do with the charging rate! As I've just said in my last post the charging rate is determined by the voltage regulator.

Ok great just wasn't sure if I have done it right so my charging system is ok now? Is there anything else I would need to do or double check? Thanks Tom

Also my ignition light is on while the engine is running is this due to not charging? thanks Tom

Hi Tom. If you read my first post (post 3) you will see I said flash the small terminal. In your post 12 you said you flashed the large terminal. You may have damaged the field winding by doing this. If the ignition light is on the dynamo is not charging. All I can suggest is you have another go at flashing the small terminal.

I have flashed the Dynamo small connector but no difference my guess is that it's no good now what should I do now to get this to charge buy a new one or is it easy to convert a alternator into it? Thanks Tom

You could get it checked out first at a local auto electrician but you'll still only have a dynamo. If you're not after originality then I'd just go ahead and fit an alternator. The wiring is easy enough to follow from the Haynes.
